I have a PIII 933 MHZ on a ASUS CUSL2 motherboard and 384MB of memory. I'm running win2000 and win98SE on a dual boot.
So far it runs like everything quite nicely.
(Actually win 2000 runs sweet. win98SE freezes and crashes but who needs it anymore).
My question is if I upgrade to a P4 will I really see any improvement? I would like to have a dual boot on my next machine win winXP and win2000.
Another consideration is the XP Palomino 2700. But, I hesitate to go via AMD because I understand that software is being recompiled to work better on the P4 longer pipeline.
Personaly I don't thing I will notice any difference for a while. What do you guys thing?

the P4 is now 3x times your current processor, of course you will notice an improvement, the question should be is it worth it!

What do you do with your current system? Play games, write letters...? Why do you want a XP & 2000 dual boot - they are essentially the same kernel with XP been slightly better but with a lot of extra "home" features.

The XP 2700 is a THOROUGHBRED, not a palomino. AMD is not recompiling to work better with the P4.

Yes, there will be a difference.

I'll Wait for the 64 bit models comes out

cuz if you upgrade now then less than 6 month later you'll need to upgrade again to 64 bit AMD or P4s

supposely in June

it was suppose to be some times in Jan/Feb

but i very doubt so

:t

I'll Definitely get an AMD 64 bit :D

You would also need a 64-bit OS. kinda humbug.

It really depends on what you do. If you are a hardcore gamer, than an upgrade might do you some good.

XP already has the 64 bit version out

and Linux Mandrake too

so OS is not a problem :t :)

You will definitley see a large increase, although id rather go with a slower AMD, such as the 2400 and overclock it some real dizzy heights. You could wait for the 64 bit stuff but i aint so sure that you wouldnt be waiting soem time.

As for 64 bit OS's there are two, but in the case of mandrake, it has trouble runnign most games :(

I know winXP 64 supports the Intel Itanium, but I'm not sure it fully supports the AMD 64-bit chips yet.

I just found out

Not if you run VM Ware in Linux then install the game inside the FAKE windows

the only draw back

no 5.1 sound only 2 speakers sound with SB AWE 64 emulation

on the Other hand

Linux 64 bit runs Perfectly on AMD 64 bit, but Intel 64 bit had problem with it, that's why Intel had to go back to the drawing boards to fix that

so that tells alot ;) :p :t

I agree with an earlier post, it depends what you are doing with your system. For example, if you're doing word processing, I doubt you'll notice much difference. It's not because the P4 isn't faster (it is) but simply because the PIII is already more than enough to handle the task. If you're looking at gaming, then the video card factors into it heavily, and so on. In terms of when to upgrade, probably the best strategy is to wait until your current system is no longer satisfactorally able to do what you want it to do. Of course, there's always the dilemma of what you need vs. what you want. ;)

And "IF" you go P4 go DDR pc2700 mem and mobo that fully supports it at that speed. IE not oclocked mem. DDR is getting faster and rdram is once again being abandon. Dont get stuck in a dead end solution even though it is truely faster on the P4. Just odnt get sdr like most the manufacturers like dell etc. give ya.

In top performance like this with mem.
#1 RDRam pc1066 (1200 on the way) or rimm 4200 (more $)
#2 Rdram pc 800
#3 PC2700 ddr (almost as fast as rdram)
#4 PC2100
#5 PC1600
#6 SDRAM pc 133 (YUCK!!!) this is the slowest you can make a P4 system today hehe.;)

Is your old P3 933 a slot1?...........if it is we can work out a deal for me to buy it off you.

unless you run games, it's not even worth it. right now even a Celeron works great for most stuff. people complain of "oh it takes like 30 seconds to load photoshop", well is it really worth spending $200 to save 20 seconds?

I don't use my comuter for anything high end. I do a lot of Photoshop work and video captures for the most part.
Also, I am currently studing for MCSE and linux to follow right after so I have it hookup up on a small network. The other computer is a P200MMX running win98 and win NT on a dual boot.
Based onyour answers it sounds like the real question to ask is upgrade now or wait for 64bit?

if you are not a gamer, there is almost never a panic to upgrade. wait for the 64 bit ;)

Bette ryet, not a gamer wait a year after 64bit and get it dirt cheap in comparison.;) Gameing is #1 strain on home pc's. Rendering #1 on buisness. With both every bit helps. WIth what you are doing anything over 1gig overkill and waiste of $ right now.:D

I would agree that if you don't require the speed that it would be a waste of money for now! Wait until the price of the new Intel P4 3.06-GHz CPU drops to half since it was introduced at such an overinflated price! Intel really could not justify what they're asking price is for that processor! The HyperThreading feature that they boast about really doesn't impress me at all. I don't think that a single CPU could not emulate or be as powerful as a dual-processor or multiple processor system.

So save your money and wait for the Athlon 64 CPUs to be released! I think that when they finally release it you will see that AMD does really put out more performance for the money!:)

Wait for newer processors & boards to be launched, then grab the older offerings at cheaper prices. Unless your system decides to die on you first... :p

I should think more OSes will be 64 bit when it actually comes out but you cant expect more than XP from M$ they arent about to release a 64 bit version of 98 are they.:p Maybe more Linux distros will.
