My fiance's parents are getting me an XP 2200+ for Christmas. I was wondering if I should reinstall Windows XP Pro.
I have switched motherboards before and not reinstalled. Windows just loaded new drivers and it was running perfectly. I'm probably going to try and NOT reinstall, but I was wondering if anyone has had any experience with this and any potential prolems it might cause. I have a lot of stuff customized in Windows (Security settings for folders, program installations, etc...) and don't really want to reinstall.

What, you mean reinstalling your Windows before putting in a new CPU? No way. :)
In my experience, nothing changes but the speed of the computer (and what cpu shows at boot time).

If you are only changing the CPU then there is no reason to reinstall.
If you are replacing the motherboard and the processor then WinXP may force you to reinstall and activate again.
Try it and see.

Sterling is right
If it's only the CPU then no-reinstall required
if new Mobo is in the process, then definitely you need to create a new HAL, thus you need re-installing

Actually, just changing the CPU requires reactivation.

Does that include AMD?
seems like that only applies to Intels
cuz i kind of did that, and it didn't ask me for re-activation
weird....
anyways.... i destroy XP again, and again went back to Win2k, XP is too chubby :p
Win2k is more slick ;)
right now i have Linux/98/2k/XP but Retiring XP soon
unless i can find a way to Kill all the stupid wizards and ballons pop ups for every stupid thing it detects has changed

AG I don't know why your having problems with xp, I'm fiddling with the reg adding new entries or making changes to it or changing pagefile sizing, effects etc. with no problems as fat32. It handles whatever I do to it without choking plus added more size to it with pm7.

I think you mis-read what i said
i said XP = chubby as in it has too much nice icons and shells effects and all that stuff that i don't need
Even after dissabling them are the interface is just not as sharp and quick
the fastest of all is Win95, then Win2k
the worse is WinME and WinXP, both are slow, too overloaded
Win98 is good if you kill IE5/6 off the system with IEradicator, then is good as Win95
anways after i sliced WinXP lean, and nulled all the stuff i don't need, i found it was the same old Win2k, yet still had all that FAT in it :p
so i decide to put back Win2k instead
in System Services i've roughtly only the 8 to 10 basic things to run the system
i strip it down way a lot
if i could have killed IE fully then it might have made a difference, and the Active X stuff
in 98/2k after i kill those, woah man, the system zooms
:D
AllGamer..
Correct me if I'm wrong.. (this goes for higher-performance systems)
But, in benchmark programs, doesn't WinXP outperform Win2k, even with all of the eye candy and stuff turned on?
Thanks,
Jawa :t

well as people says, Benchmarks are rigged :p
and i must agree
is not only me, prenty of other people on the net at work, on the street, in any coffe shoop will agree on 2K being better and more efficient
hey if you like XP you can stay with it
but i find it pointless, after turning off everything and removing all the files that i don't need
it goes back to be the same as Win2k, yet more sluggish
that's why i rather go back to Win2k, a lot less stuff to remove and turn off, but faster at the end
anyways, use what you like, as simple as that

Interesting string.
Hey AG what are your favourite tweaks in win2k and do you know of a good site where I can find them?
Cheers :t
