I was just at a big (20 person) LAN party at a friends house. I know I'm not the only person here who goes to these. I was wondering a few things:
What games do you play?
How often do you go?
How long do you stay?
Any funny stories?
Feel free to answer any of these questions, or just get off topic in the usual sysopt manner. :p

Never been to one yet. My old TFC clan has had several and I couldn't make them 'cause they were a couple thousand miles away. :(
So what all did you play? :)

never been to one, and if I do ever go, I won't be going there with a heavy moded case, or a moded case at all :P
and yea, what game did you play?
don't know if this counts as a lan party :D but in a college course the only game we ever played was when we where fooling around in our class network seeing who could remotely give the profesor a BSOD while he used the projector for lecture. Let's say that I won after bypassing his firewall, and seeing his screen turn blue :D it's nice when you remove a kernel temporarly on windows2000 server :D
boy was his pissed when he found out it was me, those snitches.
then they wondered why their hard drives got killed when they tried to power up their pc's on a day I wasn't there :D
Ocassionally we just **** off the n00b's by turning their disk into a dynamic disc remotely through mmc, and seein'g them freak when their pc's just reboot for no reason :D and opening and closing of people cd-rom's will peeve them nicelly.
then there was the time when the instructor had to replace the spring in his zip drive, and put one too strong in it that he had to catch the disk when it ejected. well, we all where watching him ready for him to insert the disk in and for us to just click and watch the thing getting spat back out. HAHAHAHA. college is fun.

I regulary create lan games with 2/3 other mates (wow huge ;) ) and we play Stronghold, Red Alert2, GTA2, Rally Championship Extreme, TOCA2 and a few others...only ever go on for about 5hrs so not many games can be played...

What games do you play?
Quake III is the de facto standard staple for us. It runs even on !intel 810 chipsets with Celery procs.
Lately my friends & I play online UT2003. I'm amazed at how well the netcode works, as even on a 56k connection one can have a ball.
Unreal Tourney is a good one too, as the textures are limited to 256 color, thus can be played fair enough on aging office machines.
How often do you go?
Whenever I hear about it. :)
I used to arrange them more often until I got married. :( Now it's only a few times a year.
How long do you stay?
Until higher priorities call: work, sleep, angry wife...
Any funny stories?
I rule. :D I usually have the best rig, I'm always in the top two for frags. Nothing equates to nailing the n00b in the head over and over and over again.. :r
I'll give you advice: when you arrange your parties make sure you all have your software set up before you go. It sucks to have to install everything while you're waiting to play.
Get pizza delivered. And bring lots of pop. Mt. Dew is a staple.

At our LAN parties we play Quake3, Couter-strike, a little TFC and Warcraft 3. One of my friends is a Quake 3 god, so we usually gang up on him. :p
It seems like I'm the only one who has half life and quake installed before the LAN. We have to wait for all the new people to get everything installed.
I used to have one of the coolest rigs, but then a bunch of my friends copied me and got the exact same case. Oh well, I'll be 1337 again when I get my water cooling system up and running. :D

After years of drooling over Lan games, I finally set one up for myself 3 or 4 months ago. A LAN with 3 fast computers, internet accessible and everything.
Man it's fun playing Starcraft/broodwar and Warcraft. I play against my brother and my gf. I could beat them on 1v1 or 3-every man for himself. But I couldn't beat them in 1 vs 2.
From here on, LAN and Internet have become a part of my life. So has Sattlelite cable 2 years ago :D
We're waiting for Starcraft 2 and other good RTSs

roflmao Squirrel, I don't do stuff like that.
roflmao, we usually do this all the time in class, but the time of me giving the instructor a bsod was just about the worst.
otherwise we would just annoy each other by opening our cd-rom drives, or by editing the desktop.ini's on some folder to display foul messages when they hovered their mouse over it. My favorite was to add some to the root of each hard drive so when they clicked once on that hard drive they will see a small misseage to the right, or a tool tip with a "nice" message on it.
Well, once we did turn class into a lan party when I brought in "worms world party" and had it already cracked so that I could just copy the contents into my hard drive, let everyone install from it and let them use a no-cd crack to play it. boy was it fun!!
I would like to try an FPS game one of these days on a lan part :D
and yea, I know that having a moded case is a must on a Lan PArty, because you are right, it's like taking your '64 Impala or Bombita down the street crusing busting the hydro's out while making the car dance to the bass :D

Yup!! the most fun games for LAN parties are RTS games like
StarCraft and Red Alert, those are our 2 favorites
then of course the classing HL/CS, Quake 3, and now UK2K3
but those are not as much fun
when we play any RTS, man you should see
it becomes like a real command post in there
people shouting tactics and operations and strategies across
it's way better than wearing those headsets and running slow speaking software over the internet :D
shoot them up we play the most are Tribes 2, the most fun one

I used to have a LAN party every month I can only host up to 12 pees due to space, but they are allot of fun. Now it's more like every few months, and I have allot more people, because I can host up to 12 clients on the web.
Games played
Quake III Arena (Various Mods)
Unreal Tournalmet
Old school
Blood
Shadow Warrior
Food
Coffee & Pizza
Methane Levels
Verry High
We have chicks play too ! my X was a bigtime gamer, man I miss her :(
Funny Stories
After playing for over 20 hours straight (not exagerating) my friend had a long trip home he made it to his street then he fell asleep and drove onto someones lawn.
I set up a spectator computer on a projector and the screen was about 7 feet wide, it made everyone spectating nautious. :D

Was that projector an LCD projector by chance? Man, I'd love to have one of those. I keep buggin' the spouse to let me get one, but I'll have better luck bringing Islamic countries into alliance with Israel, or some forum trolls to mind their P's & Q's.

I got some pics at home of the screen I'll post em later. The first one I had was a Sony LCD projector, retailed for about $8,000. My friend worked for Sony so we borrowed it indeffinitelly :D
The second one I got was allot cheaper $3,000, but for some reason allot clearer screen

**** if i could find a decent projector that could project at least a bright 10 x 7 feet screen and cost 3000, I'd get it in a heart beat.
A year ago, I did some research for my boss to purchase a projector. They ran around 10 grands to 20 grands for 1000 lumen (kinda low). Too expensive for a personal use.
__________
oh wait, these panasonic ones are hella appealing
http://www.panasonic.com/PBDS/subcat/newsinfo/press_01/01_97.html
The projectors' dimensions are a mere 10.5" (W) by 2.9" (H) X 8.2" (D).
HDTV compatible, automatically resizing 1080i and 720p images for 16:9 wide-aspect display; 480p, 480i and 625i component video signals and S-Video can also be displayed in either 4:3 or 16:9. The units deliver broad compatibility ranging from PAL, PAL-M, PAL-N, SECAM, NTSC and M-NTSC. The units are also sRGB compatible to ensure uniform, accurate color reproduction with other sRGB-compatible imaging devices.
Both projectors deliver exceptionally bright performance of 1200 ANSI lumens and display vivid, colorful images in true 1024 X 768 native XGA resolution (PT-LC75U) and 800 x 600 native SVGA resolution (PT-LC55U), while offering advanced resizing technology to support UXGA (PT-LC75U) and SXGA (PT-LC55U) resolution. The high contrast ratios of 500:1 (PT-LC55U) or 400:1 (PT-LC75U) ensure that images are sharp, crisp for computer and video images.
Around 3000 - 4000. not bad

I hope you meant SPARE.....I've been playing Morrowind too much...:)
That's a honey of a Q3A server. I like my desk too much to put my rig in a cart though. But perhaps my next machine....
I was just down at Office Depot a few days back and saw some LCD projectors for $1499, though I have no idea what lumens they're rated at or what resolution they support. But I'd pay that much for an LCD projector, especially considering that HDTV's are in that range but they take up so much more space.
