I have an old 1993 170mb IBM HDD, which I think ran in PIO4 mode. It's been "dead" for a long time as it fails to power up with voltage supplied to +5v and +12v. My dad says he has some stuff he'd like to get off that drive. I think he called years ago and they said they couldn't help. It's still being used as a paperweight :D but I want to awaken it from The Dead. Is there any way I can Resurrect this thing, or will I have to pay $$ to a data recovery service to rip the data?
I'm pretty sure you guys will say "sorry, no."
In all the HDD's time as a paperweight, the circuit board probably got ESD'd anyway

Wrap it in plastic and put it in the freezer for half a day then slave it and see if you can grab the data off before it warms up.

I've heard of this one before. I'll try and see if it works.... thx for reminding me..
BTW BPB... wouldn't seem like it matters too much to him now, does it?

Trying the extremes? Or heat it up a little exposing to sunlight to release any stackups. Sometimes it's worth knocking it off a little with a screwdriver handle.

Chilled it. Burned it. Shook it. Clobbered it. Ran it over with a 4x4. Still won't power on... I guess it's hosed. Well, it's time for one of those opening sessions now isn't it? :D
