or at least I think so. No video output. The system is a pentium 166MHz w/MMX, Packard Bell, Platinum 2010. I checked all the components in my 166Mhz Compaq one by one. Everything functioned except the CD so I replaced it with a known good one. 64Mb EDO SIMM memory. Std mouse and keyboard. When attempting to boot, the monitor screen is dark gray, floppy doesn't run, CDROM light blinks faintly once during booting up. Onboard S3 Virge video. Seagate 2.18 Gb HDD. Intel PCI Set SB82437VX / SB82371SB. Megatrends BS9642DF / PC87306-IBE/VUL ?????. Intel Flash Chip E28F002 / BXT80 / U5510273D 1.00.06. The lady who owns it figured the cmos battery was dead and replaced that. Power supply is putting out as I tested it with my Fluke meter, 5V and 12V. Bios doesn't come up at all. If it is dead, does anyone have any idea where I might find a working motherbard that will fit this case?

It sounds like the processor is dead, not the motherboard.

Take everything out of the motherboard/case except the video card. Replace the SIMM modules if at all possible and retry.

I do agree that it sounds like processor problems, but that hasn't been proven...it could be defective ram.

I swapped the processor with the 166MHz w/MMX in my compaq Both were working fine. It may be just the RAM is defective I'll check that.

there is no sure way of telling the RAM are the culfrit. It maybe that there are uneeded settings in your bios. I suggesst you take a tufftest pro test...it has a good memory testing module...that can actually pin point which module is failing.

Replaced the edo simms, didn't change anything. With no video or anything else willing to run my best bet would be that the motherboard is shot. Everything was swapped over to a working computer and verified ok. Time to find another motherboard. Thanks for all the help
