So I'm early on in the game. One of my 'errands' is to dispatch 4 robbers with swift justice.
So I head on out there, walk up to a guy to speak to him. I go through all the 'keywords' until I hit the something or other agents. The d00d then says "I think you should be running now...", pulls out his longbow and begins to drill me with arrows. Needless to say I died. And all because I casually walked up to him and made it known I was looking to kill him...:r

Early on in Morrowind is really the only time you will die unless you do something very stupid, that and fighting one person at the VERY VERY end (not the end where most people quit so to speak). You have to use a certain weapon (which you'll find tons of later on) and he turns out to be a weakling - just without that weapon, unless your a level 99 fighter with the hit points to match, he'll kill you quiet eaily. He'll wipe the floor of a level 30-40 character easily without using that one weapon (believe me, I know, I've tried fighting him without a weapon with a certain enchantment and I couldn't kill him - could get him close, but he'd always finish me off. That's about the only time after the early game you really stand a high chance of dying at any one moment other than the "end guy" who is before him - though you'll know who he is as your going after him. The guy who'll wipe the floor may surprise you if you don't really read up some of the books and notes.

now I'm getting scared. I'm only a level 3 character. I have problems with Nix Hounds still, but getting a tad better. I'm sure I'll learn eventually how to fight well....

What class are you or about what type if you went custom, like I always do.

I go custom in every game
but Morrowind is too boring for me
not enough Hacking and Slashing like Diablo 2 or Dungeon Siege :D

I just wish the combat interface was better. It's still just as simplistic as the first one. There really is no strategy other than run up and bash your opponent. Playing any class other than a fighter is a pain in the **** as most magic takes several shots to say the least to kill someone (else it eats up ALL your magicka if you make one huge custom spell). Then you spend all your time resting for hours on end with monsters in the other room. Not really much of something to pull you into the game. If you sit there blasting away with weak spells, you'll be nailed by someone with a few hits that it takes to kill an early mage. Hell, they have one cave relatively near the start of the game on your way to Balmora that has a guy with a sledgehammer that can kill a mage in one hit, and most thief type classes in two or three tops - even fighters can't stand toe to toe against him without some luck in dodging, since it has a good range, unless you have a Two Handed Sword, a Spear, or anything else with some range, it's rather hard to kill him early on just because of the sheer damage one hit from a sledgehammer does.

This d00d kicked my @ss every single time. I finally gave up & decided to come back after my hit points elevated by a factor of three or four and had the ability to use my Dwemmer Sledgehammer or some fancy shmancy enchanted longbow. I was only level 1 or 2 then, now I'm a level 3  so I'll have to wait awhile.
Oh, I think I'm an archer class or something similar, the run-away-run-away type. I chose a female character cuz I like seeing the third person view for most things & would rather have something easier on the eyes...:)

Man, you got burnt if you picked an archery class. Any enemy will charge you, and in many indoor situations, you can't run. Arrows don't do squat for damage and only being able to wear light armor (or bring up that skill quickly) will be a pain, while glass armor is great and easy to get a full set of if you know where to go - though nothing beats a near full set of Deadric Armor (can't get a full set - well you can, just you can't beat the game as it locks down the storyline, even if you get it after you've gotten what you need from the one guy with it - not to mention EVERYBODY hates you afterwords) with Ebony Pauldrons. I always have gone the basher type, any other way just got me killed to often - if I want magic I play a battlemage type template (though custom), and work on my magic later in the game, after level 15 or so, and can quickly boost it up with all the gold i have (a few million) with trainers, best to bribe them first to a 100 rep then train, it'll save you money in the long run for training all the way up to the max skill they can train.
So your in for a tough game with the class you've chosen, you'll probably need 3 to 5 levels extra before you reach the relative safety zone depending on how your guy, err girl is laid out exactly.

Well, I do fairly well @ Level 4 with the longbow. And in close combat I've always used a Long Sparkblade (or whatever it's called). All I have to do is thrust 2-3 times per d00d and they're dead, all the while step dodging their attacks. I die each day, but I'm part of the cult-of-save-early so I'm usually okay...
Have you noticed that while traversing the land that if you want to increase your acrobatic skill you simply have to find places to jump off like large boulders or staircases and eventually all that pouncing around will pay off in higher acrobatics?

Wait until you can start gen feeding Grand Soul Gems with Golden Saints - they allow you to have permantent effects (like increased attributes). With a set of three scrolls you'll find after X level near Seyda Neen (to the north following the coast roughly), you'll be able to jump a quarter of the map with an average player, though it can kill him VERY easily if the hitpoints aren't up there. I got my acrobatics to 100 with strength (or whatever it's governing attribute was to 100 as well), and did it with several custom jump spells on me - I flew halfway across the map. I was a battlemage template at level 50+, and it nearly killed me. The jump scroll itself will kill anybody with under 200 hitpoints almost garuanteed. If you want to really up your skill, use a several potions to increase your speed, then cast the jump spell in Vivec off of the Southmost platform, Vivecs Temple. Get on top it (levitate) and make sure your pointed towards deep water and at an angle, cause if you hit the end of the map it isn't pretty.
You'll be getting loads every other second even though you can't see the ground at all.
The more damage you take from a JUMPING fall the more it increases your acrobatics skill. If you just fall you don't get an increase.

I think I have that scroll you're referring to. I found it on a body which fell from the sky. I used it once to get unstuck, and it creamed me...
The acrobatics thing--no, you don't have to take damage. I measured this while at some staircases and ramps in Vivec. I checked my acrobatic level gauge, ran to the staircase and jumped down it a few times. I took no damage but did increase the gauge and acrobatic level. Perhaps you get more of an increase if you're injured?

The farther you fall in your jump, the more of an increase, but it's set up so you don't gain two or three levels from spiking the scroll with spells and enchanted item on yourself. You still can gain many more points towards the level though depending on the height of the fall. With 100 in acrobatics you SHOULD be able to jump off the top level of the first plaza in Vivic and land on the bridge and take no damage or VERY litte at all. Also just jumping everywhere you go increases the skill, 10 to 20 normal jumps will raise the level bar meter one point.
To boost magic skills after you've found all the trainers and maxed them out, make a spell for each school that cost 1 magicka to cast. It's not how hard the spell is, or how many points it take ups to increase it, it is just how many times it's cast. You get 1 point per casting if it's not a specialty at all, 2 points if its a secondary skill, and 2,3,2,3, et al IIRC if it's one of your main skills.
EDIT: there is a console command to unstick you, you ust may have to due it several times. I can't recall it though.
