I said yes ( ). Ended up having to reinstall windows 98!(double  ). Actually this probably isn't the WEIRDEST way, though it is probably the DUMBEST(Triple:rolleyes: ) xenomorph69 12-21-2002, 12:18 PM When I got really ticked off with Win 98 .More sadistic than anything. It froze for the last time, SO........ I opened a ms-dos prompt went to the root of C:\ then typed deltree /y C:\*.* and then watched Windows 98 DIE!!!!!!!!!!!!! I laughed while it died the Desktop dissapeared Icons Dissapeared the command shell Dissapeared and the default desktop came up the only thing that was left is what was still left in memory, that was it What a memorable day :D gjimene2 12-21-2002, 12:29 PM hahahaha well let's see. I had my onboard audio blow and then my mobo started going on life support, bearly making it boot after boot, sometimes I thought that I had to wave a dead chicken above my head in order to get it to boot back up. Finally I had enough cash to build me a new one with the other one being cannibalized for this one. Someone Stupid 12-21-2002, 03:46 PM Bought an Intel, overclocked it, it didn't like it. causticVapor 12-21-2002, 04:25 PM OK, one really stupid thing and another non-fault thing. 1) I ran a K6-2 500 (.25micron) at 550 with 2.8vcore for a few months. Then I said hell and tried to bring it to 600. Not stable at 2.8, so next step was 3.2.... sizzle... pop! 2) Put arctic silver on a Palomino 1800+ and then had difficulty installing the water block. Said "oh *****" after hearing a crunching sound, but it POSTed all and well. Then, after getting into windows, POP! Shutdown. Horrible electrical smell in case. User running around in a rampant fit. :x Mroe to add later. DocEvi1 12-21-2002, 04:46 PM Switched PSU from 230 to 110 on a 386, one blown PSU and capacitor later.... Stefan gjimene2 12-21-2002, 07:17 PM don't you mean from 110 to 220 Doc? omega31 12-21-2002, 07:34 PM UK is different from US, so Doc meant what he said. the xenon 12-21-2002, 09:55 PM I had a 486 Toshiba notebook well one day it was a big storm (with thunderbolts and stuff) I was online on my notebook, well i dunno something happened like a lightning hit the house or the post near the house, but the comp was fine i didnt even think that it may affect it. The next morning I wake up try to boot it up, and nothinn gg    It didnt even goto POSt screen :( It was around 5 years ago this happened ( i didnt know about computers much) ..... i dont really remember all the details but i fixed the notebook and since then that is what i do :) Someone Stupid 12-21-2002, 11:27 PM I had that happen with a P3 system with the power spike from an electrical hit from a storm. Blew the UPS (the battery in it was litterally no good after) - hence the only way APC even agreed to give me my money, even with obvious proof of the computer itself "maybe it wasn't plugged in" they would argue on the phone. So after taking pictures of it, I sent them the UPS (Universal Piece of ****), and they decided that I probably could clean them out in court, so they gave me my money 3 months later- *******s. Lighting struck a pole (with a nice big transformer on it which went up in smoke) right outside my house, my line was the nearest ground, hence I got hit very hard, tripped my mains breaker and took out two televisions and a stereo as well. The TV's were just blow capacitors mostly, cheap fix considering my neighbor was an electrician... Was about 10 dollars total in parts. The stereo was under warranty, so it got shipped back as it was fragged. gjimene2 12-22-2002, 01:32 AM Originally posted by omega31 UK is different from US, so Doc meant what he said. well, I don't see how throwing a lower voltage on a system can do harm. now if he UPPED the voltage, then it would to harm. that's why I said from 110 to 220 danee 12-22-2002, 03:56 AM Not PC, but Stereo... and i trashed it: Old house mate use to have a stereo on which she use to play really bad commercial Pop music (think in likes of Britney), really loud, at very early hours of the morning - when im trying to sleep in the room next to hers. Anyway, the stereo was one of those largish clockradio's that incorporate a CD player and cassette, with the speaker integrated into the unit and protected by a plastic grill... just like an ordinary clock radio. Anyway, one day, when she had gone to work, i got a knife from the kitchen and simply cut up the speaker thru the grill. Anyway, next day.. she went to use it... everything seemed to work, but there was no sound, and nothing looked different about it - its almost as if it suddenly stopped working. She did suspect me of tampering with it,.. but with no visable signs of damage, i guess she gave up on that thought. Someone Stupid 12-22-2002, 04:44 AM She didn't see bloody knife marks in the speakers? TARP2 12-22-2002, 05:55 AM Nice, Danee:( My 486/66 is dying a slow death in the garage, I must find a use for it. DocEvi1 12-22-2002, 08:21 AM Originally posted by gjimene2 well, I don't see how throwing a lower voltage on a system can do harm. now if he UPPED the voltage, then it would to harm. that's why I said from 110 to 220 thats what I thought as well, but never mind. In the UK we have a 240V mainline throughout the house....so switching down to the lower voltage probably put too much current through the weaker line. It did make a nice green flash tho! Stefan yea, that's kinda weird. That's why I love these automatic voltage switches that the comps come with now and days :D Yea, over here If I wanted to, I could just hit 110volts per line (not from the same pole though, otherwise it would be 110volts shared on two lines) and giving me 220, and just having the neutral recieving the ground :D Hey, can you guys imagine how much electricity you guys would be saving if you guys went to the 110volt standard? Over here in my house everything is 110 volts except for the A/C unit + condencer and the dryer :D leprechaun_40 12-23-2002, 03:58 PM gjimeme, 240 is actually more efficient, esspecially in motors, uses fewer amps. Although it's not as safe as the 120. You also don't save anything in cost with one over the other if they measure by watt hours anyhow, because although you use fewer volts (120) you use more amps, and the equation works out the same as if you used 240, because you use fewer amps, :D SysOpt.com
