My friend was given a game that plays only on 256 color.

His computer has 16,24 and 32 bit. Never heard of a computer without 256.

Its a gateway, 166, OS windows95. Cable modem

Is there any way to get 256 to his computer? They gateway techs couldnt help.

Right click on the desktop, click on setting and there should be an option to select color quality.

If I understand you right , you already checked the color quality setting in the display properties, and you only see 16, 24, 32 bit.
These settings are determined by the vga and monitor drivers that are most compatible for your monitor.
Some games will make the change for you and replace the settings when done. So try playing the game first or check the readme.txt on the CD for instructions.
If your running XP , right click the game on the desktop or from the start menu , and then click Properties. Click the Compatibility tab, and then select the Run in 256 colors check box. Your display reverts to its default color quality when you close the program. I'm not sure this available in W95.
Another way is to open Display Properties in Control Panel , click the Advanced button on the Settings tab, click the Adapter tab, and then click List all Modes. Select the resolution, color level, and refresh rate you want. I'm pretty sure this procedure wont revert the settings back to the previous settings. So, you'll need to make changes again in Display Properties.

The problem is solved. Friend now has 256 color. The problem and I guess not certain is a Win95 thing. It was her resolution when it was set back to 640x480 256 color showed up and her game played.
