Why are all sewer manholes in the world made round instead of some other shape?

because that is the most ergonic shape for a human to pass through.

The round shape works better. A circle can take pressure from all sides better than other shapes.

No, because a circle is the only shape where the cover cannot fall through. Many holes nowadays also have a rim inside, underneath the cover, of narrower diameter for extra prevention.

It's hinged, thus it can't be rotated into any possible way for it to fall. We have some large hinged ones around here, but most are circular, and sm8000 beat me to it. Circles are the only shape that can't fall in, not without a sledgehammer and some questionable intent to say the least. :)

so is not really that reason

but what DocEvi1 says is true, it's simply due Human Ergonomics, basically less sharp edges

yup, be a mixture of all the answers...all the covers round here are tri-angular anyway (a rectangle made in two bits) so ner!

They are round because they are easier to move around. Sewer rats aren't stupid just smelly.

I remember about five years ago that a woman wanted to change the name of manhole covers to peoplehole covers because the use of the name manhole covers was chauvinistic.............LOL
