As I understand, before fooling around in the Registry (i.e....removing files associated with programs that have been deleted, etc...) it's suggested that back-ups be made of the System.Dat and User.Dat files.
How do I do that, when my System.Dat file is 6761KB in size? A High Density floppy is a bit too small for the task.
Windows automatically backs up the Registry every day. The backups are stored as rbXXX.cab files in Windows\Sysbckup. You can edit scanreg.ini to allow up to 99 backup versions. The default is 5, I use 20.
You can Run >scanregw.exe to make a fresh backup before you tamper with the Registry. If needed, you can run scanreg.exe from the DOS prompt to restore a backup. The lowest number is the most recent. Backups above 004 must be renumbered to be accessed by scanreg.exe. [Anyone know how to change this bug?]
