Hi I have two desktops and one notebook. I have the desktops linked to a ethernet hub which it self is linked to a cable modem (in the WAN socket). Currently surfing the internet is very slow.
My bandwidth is rated at 4-8mps. but I get something like 1mps-1.5mps. But that is on the computer that all of the other computers must link too to get online.
If I buy a router would this speed things up, on all three computers?
thanks

A router can simplify things.

You didn't say what kind of hub it is, but in any case you should get a router with a switch.

i forget the name of the maker but it is a 10mps hub.....I want to get a 100mps hub so that I can send large files between the two desktops very quickly.
Actually setting up the hub did not take long....
but internet access on my wife's computer is very slow.
Here is the set up.
My desktop must be online for my wife's computer to go online.
With a router can the signal be split so that I do not have to use my computer as the primary internet connection that other computer need to link to before going online?
Also if I get a 100mps lan card will it speed up my dl's? and reduce my pings in online games?
Thanks!!

get a switch, not a hub. hubs just split the total bandwidth, while switches can give dedicated bandwidth to each port.
adding a 100mbps nic won't speed up your internet, but it will speed up data transfers between your home computers.

A Broadband Router / Gateway will eliminate the need for your pc to be online so the other can connect to the internet. What happens is, you input login credentials into the router / gateway setup. With the proper information the router / gateway will login / connect whenever your broadband modem is turned on (for some DSL ISPs the router / gateway will re-login as needed also). Most of these devices also have a integrated firewall, which can be a ***** with online gaming...thats why i opened mine as DMZ, ?allowing all traffic?
You didn't specify which type of internet connection you have. If it is dial up, this particular setup won't work.
