Video drivers, video drivers, video drivers and video drivers - in that order, unless you're overclocked. Then it's default clock, drivers, drivers and drivers.

Darn - I might be wrong. What is your CPU temp like? When was the last time you cleaned out the dust bunnies?

Oh yeah - check the condition of the AGP card fan if you have one. I have seen heatsinks fall off and fans stop working.

yeah i cleaned it not too long ago, although i think i might need to take some compressed air to it....
yeah i thought it might be overheating too....
but....
i actually took a house fan... (one that goes in a window) and layed it to the side of my case, turned it on high, and tried playing.... it still froze....
and also, if it was an overheating issue, wouldnt my comp freeze more than only in games?
if you read my post http://www.sysopt.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=125001 it might have some relation to this issue? mabye? any more ideas?
thanks,
taur

Have you tried updating DirectX?
Also scan for spyware:

...and kill any background programs you may have running. It wouldn't be a bad idea to seek updates for the games too.

Could you have a bad video card even if it is fairly new. I had this problem with one. Could be that when video ram fills up a bad spot corrupts info and causes this crash.

Could be the sound card. Try turning the audio settings to minimum in the games control panel , see if it helps. Update the audigy drivers if you haven't.

What sound card are you using?
Locking up 2 seconds into a game sound like a sound card issue.

didn't consider the sound card - i have slow perfomance in one of my pc's with video because my sound card is sb16. it trys to keep the timing right so performance is all over the place. (not the system I primarily use)
  :t

I went back an looked at what you listed for system spec. You are on a AMD based system. There are known problems with SB products and some of the chipsets used for AMD cpu's. What is the chipset used on the board you have?
You didn't list the OS. If you are using 98 or ME. look at your IRQ's. SB likes to use IRQ 11. It just so happens this is the same IRQ that most video cards like to use also. If the sound blaster and the video are on the same IRQ. You can bet money it will lock up.
When I build a computer with a SB card in it. I put that card in the lowest pci slot. Most of the time it won't interfer with the video IRQ.
