I'm buying a new copmuter later this month, should I go with intel or AMD. I hear the Athlon totally kills the intel chip in benchhmarks. what ahould I do? if I got intel would I be hurt in the longrun??

Thanks,

first, Athalon. There is a company designing a system that goes 1gh with the K7/Athalon chip.

Ed,
Athlon/K7 Mobo's by FIC,Gigabyte and Microstar will be availible Aug 10, all are shipping with AMD chipsets. If I had the spare change for such an investment i would wait like Tiger, for lower prices and K7 streamlined mobo chipsets.

Long Live Athlon!

Where did you get that Mobo's would be available aug 10. Maybe the Athlon CPU but not the Mobo. I've been to the website of all three of the companies you listed. Here is what AMD says about getting an Athlon system.

I will probably get an Athlon, because I am a loyal fan of AMD, but if I had to suggest a system for a friend it would be Intel - hands down.

Wait until the smoke clears and the water settles until thinking about the Athlon - we have heard this song and dance before at the introduction of the K6, and it was never the Pentium killer it was touted to be. It only killed them in price.

I expect there to be a number of compatibility bugs, especially given the shortage of available motherboards. My opinion is to sit back and let AMD and the motherboard manufacturers work out the bugs prior to laying down the cash.

If you plan on getting a new computer this month, it will not be with a K7. The processors start shipping this month but nobody has a motherboard for it yet. (Retail)

I'd wait until both the P3 and the Athlon drop in price (happy happy price war!) before buyin either.

I would also recommend the Athlon over the P3.

I'm so glad to see all the support for the Athlon! I hope this processor will be capable of replacing any and all Intel CPUs in the future (maybe that's being a little too hopeful).
Personally, I'm getting quite SICK of great computer companies getting too big for their britches and turning sour (I can think of three). The day when I can vow to "never purchase a Mircosoft product again" is nowhere in sight, but maybe soon I can proclaim "No more will I let Intel be inside!"
Ok... I'm done thinking out loud now. Thanx for your patience.
