I have been having a problem ripping audio. Some of the songs sound tinny or the voices are very distant. I have tried various software and input devices. Any suggestions or information will greatly welcome. I have downloaded some mp3's and have heard some with the same problems.

Havn't had exactly those problems but I changed the type of CD's I was burning with and stopped crackling noises, low volume when listening to CD's used to happen until I upgraded my SB16 to a PCI128.
Hope I helped.

Are you talking about just ripping from CD? Or are you talking about that AND encoding to MP3? They are two seperate issues.
For ripping audio from CDs to WAVs with no loss in quality you can't go wrong with www.ExactAudioCopy.de (http://www.exactaudiocopy.de/)
And for some of the best encoding (compression) from the WAV file to an MP3 file, you want to use LAME. You can find LAME here dkutsanov.chat.ru (http://dkutsanov.chat.ru/) but I'd recommend you go for the easy way to use LAME, and that's with the front-end for it called
RazorLAME (http://www.dors.de/razorlame/) .
But actually, here's the only link you need because you'll find those links at this site as well. This place will give you quite a bit of knowledge on dealing with MP3s. I highly recommend you take a little time and read through it. Go here: www.r3mix.net (http://www.r3mix.net/) , you'll learn a lot.
