Mpeg Codecs?

I am currently using Windows ME and I was looking to see where I can find some Mpeg codecs. I tried to install the DIVX codecs and the when I uninstalled them, I think it took the other MPEG ones with it. I tried the Mircrosoft site but I couldn't find anything about codecs on there.

While on the subject, does anybody know the best way to compress a very large AVI? I tried using virtual dub but I don't think it likes Windows ME.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

According to Tom's Hardware (http://www.tomshardware.com) , this codec is the best one !
