I remember someone posting on sysopt that they use two modems together, kind of like they are striped i guess, and he connects at around 96k with two 56k modems..well, i have two 56k modems (not the same company) how do I do this? or does it all depend on my isp(bellsouth.net)? thanks

Only one needs to be Diamond, must be model that supports Shotgun technology. Other modem can be anything, doesn't even need to be 56K.
Obviously you need two phone lines.

Also must be supported by the ISP, few do this. Mine doesn't. I've got the hardware, just can't use it.

Have heard you can make it work using two ISPs, but haven't really looked into it.

Chip,

That might have been me. I am currently using the Diamond shotgun setup (both are Diamond modems and this is what Diamond recommends but you can use a different modem for the 2nd one). I regualarly connect to my ISP at 96 to 97 but as Ed mentioned It does require two phonelines and your ISP must allow 2 connections at the same time. (My ISP charges the full amount for the second account (but I also got the extra web space). Wished they would give me a discount!) But Cable is not going to be avalible in my area for about another 12-18 months /forum/frown.gif I also have heard people using different isp's for the different modems but I personally dont know about that.

Lets see, I have about got my wife talked into getting a second phone line so that I can have my computer online all the time and not tie up the phone, but how in the heck am I going to convince her to let me tie up both lines with the computer..I can't wait until cable gets here!!

what i think is just sad is all the people (myself included) who are screaming for cable service in their respective area, and its just not available yet....do companies not realize that people actually do want this???? some of us need quicker downloads than 4k a sec. i guess i have been spoiled since being at Georgia tech being on a t1 line. those were the days...

Windows 98 has it's own ways of linking 2 modems together. It's called Multilinking, and you need 2 seperate phone lines and an ISP that supports it. I've heard it's simply better than the Shotgun technology. It's under the multilink tab of the properties of any connection in Dial-up Networking.

Around here some of the local ISP's say they don't support multilinking but it works anyway. Maybe they have it enabled but don't want all the headaches trying to make it work for the dumbers. In any case I'll bet you could try a friends login with the same ISP and a second modem installed and you might get surprised.

Just to clarify a couple of points.
You DO NOT need any Diamond modems, any two modems will work, although it's much easier if they're two different types, not identical.
Your ISP must support multilinking.
You must have a second phone line.
Diamond's "Shotgun" technology is so full of bugs, I don't know anyone who ever got it working right, other than those who bought the (now discontinued) Shotgun modem.
Windows 98 and 98SE have Mulitlinking built in, and it's FAR easier to use than Shotgun.

There is a way to use 2 modem without multilinking but not as good or effective thought. doesn't work with napster, or getright. only www and ftp. go to www.midpoint.com (http://www.midpoint.com) to download your trial version for 20 day. it called midpoint teamer v.4.04 about 3.5meg. what it does, is split anything you want to download say 2meg into 1meg and 1meg and use two of your connection to do the job. once it complete, it merges it back into 1 file. When you browse the internet it also much faster, because both modem are utilized simataneously.

Hello Antonio, did you ever find a solution to speeding up your connection using two modems, phone lines and ISPs? I have installed a program called midpoint teamer from www.midpoint.com (http://www.midpoint.com) but it only speeds up internet and downloads, not gaming. I am particularly interested in the gaming issue. Any info would be appreciated, Charles
