OverClocka 12-15-2002, 08:59 PM i am a student at nyc public schools so if there transit strike i dont have to go. sure its kind of selfish, because businesses will lose money, but ya know :p Bovon 12-15-2002, 09:29 PM Geeeze guy, you could just quit school, and become one more cow-patty in the human race **** pile...but there is an entire city that depends on this form of transportation. Responsible people that need to work, to support the city, state and country...and you would have them placed at a severe disadvantage, cripple the city so you can stay home from school?? Selfish don't even come close!! ClockerNovice 12-15-2002, 09:58 PM Amen Bovon, as a former New Yorker I can attest to the neccessity of the NYCMTA. My brother is still there and the city is mandating no cars with fewer than 4 people can cross a bridge or tunnel into Manhattan. This is gping to be a nightmare for commuters especially people who drove to work before this. Many of which don't carpool. Grow up JR., one day your gonna wish you had your school time back and you will regret wasting your time worrying about stuff like TA strikes. ANd by the way, don't get comfy if they do strike, it will last about 1 day, no way the city will let it go into the holidays. You know what, if there are any TA workers who read this, try being a little less selfish, you want an 8% raise, I have worked in the subways as a union Laborer, and can say pretty confidently, you guys make too much as it is. The firefighters, who make dirt, didn't get a raise and you guys, of all people, want 8%!!! I'm sorry with the World Trade Center rebuild, and the second avenue subway project on the horizon, there really isn't alot of money, maybe with the rate increase on the subways next year will be a little brighter, but give it a rest the world doesn't care about your gripes, especially when your out to destroy the holidays for real workers. Bovon 12-15-2002, 10:51 PM Holy smokes, ClockerNovice... I also worked in the union ranks...for nearly 40 years. The most raise we ever got was 5% over the 3 year contract period, but we had also worked without a contract for nearly 4 years when we threatened to strike. We didn't get any back pay to make up for the lost wages either...not all union labor walks out when the day arrives that their contract expires...mainly those that don't give a **** about anybody but themselves. bushmaster 12-16-2002, 08:47 AM No you really don't want a transit strike as that costs the city roughly $350 million a day and since **** rolls down hills, the taxpaying working class of the city will be left to absorb those losses. X-mass vacation is just around the corner, be patient. ClockerNovice 12-16-2002, 11:31 AM there was a transit strike in Calgary, Canada a few years back Something tells me that 15 million people don't ride the trains everday in Calgary, if you haven't been to NY, or lived there then you don't realize how critical the transportation system is there, the bridges and tunnels are the only way into Manhattan if the subway goes on strike, the city will shut down, and I mean just about everything Optimus Prime 12-16-2002, 11:34 AM Originally posted by ClockerNovice Something tells me that 15 million people don't ride the trains everday in Calgary, if you haven't been to NY, or lived there then you don't realize how critical the transportation system is there, the bridges and tunnels are the only way into Manhattan if the subway goes on strike, the city will shut down, and I mean just about everything NY relies that much on railway transport? god help them if they ever come to Britain :D. ClockerNovice 12-16-2002, 11:37 AM You have to remember, Manhattan is an island and there only about 15 ways onto the island, half of which are subways, take those out that is about 7-10 millioon people per day that ride the train into the city per day that will flood the roads, you don't get a grasp at how BIG, NY is until you go there. Visit there sometime and you will understand, 20 million people are there all the time, 12 million live there everyone else is on buissness or a tourist, and the TA wants to strike 2 weeks before christmas, thats selfish OverClocka 12-16-2002, 04:33 PM Yah, if you would like to know the exact number 7.2 million people take the MTA (bus/subway). Thats more than the population of 36 states (no, not combined). In the event of a strike my school will be empty. Since i go to a so called "elite" school people come from all around the city, sometimes as far as 15 miles away. No way in hell there gonna get to school. SysOpt.com
