can I do this? I have a 9 gb quantum ultra 160 68 pin scsi harddrive that is dead, I need a new one and wanted to know if I can buy an ultra 320 with my current controller. Also if price wasn't a consideration is scsi still that much better than the new ide drives with the 8 mb of cache-another option?

The U320 drives are backwards compatable. It will work on your card with no problems.

Yes SCSI is still better than even the 8 meg IDE drives. Those drives did narrow the field some. But SCSI still has a big edge in access times. It does still lead in data transfer rates. But not by much.

Sounds like you have been on SCSI for a while. You would misss the access times of the SCSI drive. Even the old 9.0 gig you have. If it is a Atlas 2 then it has a access time of 7 mls by HDtach. I have one in this computer. It is going to get Mandrake 9 on it very soon.

The IBM SCSI drives are at a good price.

Yes, U320 drives are backward compatible, even back down all the way to the very first generation of 5 MB/s SCSI controllers (problems with SCSI BIOS vs. drive size aside). U320 drive on U160 host adapter is no problem.

Hypermicro.com has the best prices on SCSI drives that I have found. An 18 gig IBM 15k drive is around $130. I would send them an e-mail first and see if the offer for a free LSI U160 card is still good. If it is then you can get a free U160 card for a spare or trading material.

The deal was to go through www.storagereview.com to learn the code for the deal, and then purchase a 15k rpm IBM drive at hypermicro and get a free (bulk) LSI U160 card. Buy a cable along with that, and you're set.

But it seems kimdwc has an U160 controller already?!

I know he has a U160 card all ready. But if he has to buy a new drive anyway. Might as well see if he can get a free card to go with it. Its nice to have a spare around.

You never know when you might convert a friend to SCSI. :D
