The only time I've ever had a problem like that is when a device is built into the motherboard. Windows kept detecting it until I disabled it in the bios. Hope that helps

Your computer may be re-detecting your sound card. I have no idea how or why this happens, but sometimes windows forgets it has a device already installed.
It does that for my monitor sometimes.

Many PCI cards have more than one function and are thus detected more than just once. You may have the primary function of one of your cards correctly installed but there may be others as well that Windows is trying to install for you.
For instance, a PCI modem I had was detected three times (once for the modem itself, again for HSF, and again for Voice Wave Device), the AWE64 was detected three times (once for Wave, again for MIDI, and again for Creative Gameport), a video capture card was detected twice (once for video, and again for audio).
Try letting Windows go all the way through the detection process and see what it is trying to install. If it is merely detecting exactly the same device twice, try deleting that device entirely from Device Manager and re-install again from scratch.
