Does anybody know the names of programs that would alow me to set up my own web server. Which would allow me to have subdomains (what i mean by subdomains is http://whatever.mydotcom.com)
And also a program that would alow me to be a mail server also so i could make e-mail addresses like whatever@mydotcom.com...
If anybody could help me that would be great.....

thanks,

Well to do all of that you're not just going to need and App. You'll need a whole new OS. I would advise checking into Linux. With that OS you can have that kind of setup and all you need is included. There are many distributions to choose from. I personally would suggest either Mandrake 7.2 or SuSE 7.1, either of which can be downloaded for free (IF you have a highspeed connection) or bought at a brick and mortar store. The added advantage to buying them is the printed reference material that comes with them. Good Luck

You might have better luck in "general tech" or "networking". Send a mail to socalgal or Mtnsnow and they will probably move this for ya. As per your question, I think your best bet would be a linux box with apache. Quite a chore for a windows user like myself, but well worth it in the long run. You are going to need HTTP, SMTP, POP3, DNS and prolly FTP.
I know this isnt much help but its a start. best of luck to you.

General luck is better...lol

Anyway, go download the FREE microsoft peer web server. It is a dumbed down version of IIS ( Internet Information Server ).

It will work with all Windows 32 bit OS's and will allow you to publish web pagesand FTP directly from your standard windows PC.

You can also look to a app called MINIPORTAL which is based on Apache for Windows machines. and as for DNS you can look into BIND
