I wanted to get involed with my cable providers news group. so i d/led freeagent since i heard it was very simple to use. so i d/l i call up coxs @Home and they said to just type news in. did and i get a winstock error can't find host. im running win2k and have a router. would the router mess up my connection. like do i have to open up a port? or did the coxs guy give me the wrong name

Well just typing in news won't work I don't think. You need to type in the address of the news server. ex. news.blah.com . So yours is prolly news.home.com or something like that.

My Road Runner Cable is owned by Cox and it uses
news-server
I don't know if cox@home uses the same thing.
One other thing, you have to have your news server set up for free agent or any other news reader to work.
Just need to set up the news-server through one of your cable email address.

Hmmm well I don't know if this helps, I know I don't have Coxs@home, I have Comcast at home but mine is the same thing, the news server is just news, heck the mail server is just called mail .. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

Yes you might have to do that. The port almost always used by your ISPs news servers is port 119.

And yes, just the word "news" should connect you to your ISPs news server. However you're not limited to using that particular server (although it will probably be your fastest).

I have a list of about 30 different @Home news servers that I can connect to. My default server is extremely fast but sometimes lacking on content. I've found that even though all these servers are run by @Home some of them have much longer retention time some have all complete messages while others seem to only have partials.

I'm still an Agent user and will be happy to assist with configuration if you need. Feel free to email me. Remind me that you're using FreeAgent so I'll know how to appropriately help. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gifuT

I have @home and the news servers are in this format. "news.or.home.com" it's normaly your state just look in your DNS properties it will say what it is there.
