I have cable for internet access, and wish to use one of 3 comps for a Wingate server to share the connection and provide a firewall, etc. My slowest machine is a Pentium 75Mhz with 32mb of RAM, and my fastest machine is a Pentium 4 2.4Ghz with 512mb of RAM. I also have a 3rd but it's a Pentium 3 500Mhz with 512mb of RAM. My question is...does it matter if I were to use the Pentium 75Mhz for the WinGate server or would it be better to have my fastest machine (The 2.4Ghz) manage the network connections?. I have plenty of network cards available to do either one, but what are the advantages/disadvantages to using each machine. Tell me what you think.

The Computer with the Fastest CPU and Direct Connection to the ISP with 2 nics and most RAM

should act as the WinGate server

BUT!!!!! why in the world do you want that?

get a Router instead

i've used WinGate in the past, and still a big fan of it, but is.... Slow compared to a real router

in the past router used to cost $ over a grand, but now in days a router cost as little as $40 bucks

If you put the slowest machine as the gateway, it will bottleneck your other computer's connections. If you put your fastest machine, it will get bogged down with requests from your other computers. Get a router and then you won't have to turn on your gateway everytime your other computers need internet access. :)
