I have gotten that error messages countless times - from trying to play .avi files no less. I even installed Media Player 7 to see if it comes with newer/more codecs and it popped up the same error message.

I have downloaded and installed IrfanView (http://www.irfanview.com) now - so that I can play any troublesome files... I suggest you do the same to save yourself the headaches of finding the right codecs every time. This doesn't mean you have to get rid of Media Player... just use IrfanView for files you can't open with Media Player.

Did you have problems with AVI files at all? I was also told about this DIVX codec and wasn't sure if it applied only to MPEG/MPEG2/MPEG-4 files that couldn't play...

Thx.

I had that problem to untill i got my video editing software and found out what played them. and all of them were the same i recommend going here http://www.divx-digest.com/software/divxcodec.html to get the divx codec. also try this http://codecs.nm.ru they claim to have all codecs but it goes to slow for me (56k). hope this may help anyone.
