What OS are you running? I have always used a Win98 boot disk to re-partition my drives and install windows. Never used the program that came with the hard drive. I wouldn't try using the boot disk unless you are putting windows on. Either way, check your literature that you SHOULD have gotten with your drive, should say one way or the other.

I wonder if that's really the cause. I have one I use so much it's lovingly named "Old Faithful" It's made from Win95 non 98 and I had 2 partitions on the drive. Fat32 and 16.
I have done several different configurations with it, and no problems. Are you sure you're doing it right? And doing the formatting in the right order? I have used it on my 20 gig Fugitsu also. Did you remember to put the system files on the active partition?

Oh or the latest "stupid" Fdisk trick I performed was to not read the small print and have the hard drive jumpered for cylinder limitation. (think I sometimes get cylinder limitation tho) http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif

what exactly is happening is after creating the partition fdisk asks for a restart after restart the partition that fdisk creats vanashes there is no record of it ever exicting no partition no format.

Just go back into fdisk.
If you want Large Disk Support (Fat32) type 'y', thats the first thing to come up.
Next, you will want to create a partition.
Set that partition up as active.
Exit out of fdisk. Reboot your computer with a boot disk and format the drive.

the harder i try to explain this the less everybodyseems to understand me if this is my fault i apologise.

when i rebbot AFTER creatin a fat 32 partition and t try to faomat the partition un known drive error keeps poping up so i want BACK into Fdisk to see what has happed the partition a created on the previous session is not listed ie dose not exist or has not written onto the drive.

i apologise again for this little outburst but i am **** at explaining things and it gets frustrating after a while
