We have an older Acer 2x burner but it isn't supported with a lot of things like CloneCD or even 700MB CDs.

So what's the best low-cost CDRW on the market right now? I think even a 6x is perfectly fine! As long as it's $100-$150.

Thanks.

Check Pricewatch out, you can get one for as little as 65$, I find deals in the sunday morning local newspapers sale ads for the office supply and computer chains, I recently purchased 2 Iomega (Plextor) 12x10x32's for 99$ apiece from CompUSA and at the same time got 200 16x cdr media from OfficeMax for FREE!!!

Thanks guys... so the IOMEGA is a Plextor?

I looked into the IOMEGA $30 manufacturer's rebate and that ended 3/31/01. I can still get it for $109 from CompUSA though...

Just need to know if the brand is trustworthy and dependable.

The Iomega 8x4x32 is made by Sanyo I think.
The 12x10x32 is a Plextor.

*NOTE*

Do Not Accept the speed ratings of CD-ROM's or CD-R's as cast into stone.

The figures given are not really accurate as to the final speeds of read or write that you may experience.

This came out several years ago when CD-ROM speeds went past the 2x mark.

Lots of companies were "claiming" speeds of 24x 32x 48x etc but in fact were NOT delivering the nameplate data.

In practice when you burn CD's to run data in "Any" other machine the burner will default to a slower speed.

I'm sure someone else will elaborate on any misconceptions I've stated here..

While this does not directly answer your question, these two sites consistently have the best deals, sometimes 2/3s of what their competitors ask for the same item:
www.jazztechnology.com (http://www.jazztechnology.com) I have done business with them. Never a problem
www.shentech.com (http://www.shentech.com) Their prices are higher than Jazz, but the shipping can make up the difference

Goldwingnut--thanks for the links! I just ordered one of these: http://www.shentech.com/lit12cddrivr.html

Looks like a good drive for the $$, according to its specs, anyway. I know nothing of LiteOn...anyone have any feedback, good or bad?

compusa has a bundle with an HP 9150 and a rio 500 mp3 for $150 this week. The rio is sold by HP on their website for over $150 - so you could look at it like you're getting teh CD writer for free

Good question.
About a month ago, Pacific 16x10x40x, $170
Now, QUE 16x10x40x, $150
both are after rebate.
Frys or COMPusa are the shops.
