Currently at my company we have a Exchange Server 5.5 running on a Win NT4 Server box. I got a lot of requests from the on the road users adn they would like to have access of email and address books from anywhere in the world via the web broswer, so I am currently doing research and would like to know what kind of alternative I have to tackle with the requests.

Please kindly advise.

I'm not totally sure how to do it on 5.5, but here's a good link:

I know it's not 5.5, but it should get you thinking.

The major concern is security. you are opening a huge hole into your network. You should have a firewall in place BEFORE you open up your network. I'm not the admin that does the email, but we have an ISA server dedicated to controlling webmail access to the exchange 2000 server.

Another thing you could try is to create a vpn server. then the users and dial in and connect to the network that way. you can enable encryption and other security measures. Not only would they be able to get email, but their work files as well. Again, do your research on security first.

if your company is big enough, you may want to get a consultant to help you. sorry I couldn't give you more specifics.

First off you need IIS installed with Active Pages (a Requisite)

and it must be at least IIS 3.0

then you need to re-install MSE 5.5

which mean, you'll also need to re-install Service PACK 4

which also means, you'll need to be ready to run that Web-Email on any NON standard ports

If you are already running port 80 for some sort of webserver

then you'll also prepare security settings etc, etc

but we'll go to that when you are done with the above

I believe you're looking for Outlook Web Access.

AG has you in the right direction, but you don't need to use port 80 if you're using Proxy Server alongside that MS Exchange box. Use a non-descript port that most scanners wouldn't check; that's exactly what we've done at my office.

Otherwise, what he has said sounds plausible.

Good luck!

EDIT - search the Microsoft Product Support Database and TechNet for implementing and configuring Outlook Web Access. In addition to the help you'll receive here, you'll do just fine. I'd walk you through it, but sadly my Exchange knowledge is limited.

Again, good luck!
