Here's the deal...
my mouse is pretty much had it, and i'm going to go mouse shopping in about a day or two...
my current mouse is a 2 year old ps/2 Intellimouse 1.x ... I'm interested in some input from people that are happy with thier mouse...
so far i've been pretty happy with the quality and ergonomics of the M$ mouse that has finally croaked... (it really doesn't track the x axis very well anymore (no its not dirty) and the wheel has been sketchy for about a year)
I find it amazing that the button switches have lasted this long... any generic mouse i've ever bought usually needs new switches after about 6 months...
Here are my criteria...
NO optical... i hate optical mice...
NO USB... It needs to work in DOS, i like having a mouse in Fast Tracker...
ok.. fire away..

If your motherboard has a BIOS setting for USB legacy support, the USB mouse will work in dos (and in windows safe mode, Linux, etc). USB mice are easier to find here.
Logitech mouseman+. Has outlasted my 2 previous Msoft mice and although diff looking and a bit larger than the the Msoft mouse I will be getting another Logitech when this one dies as well.
Works fine in dos 'not that there is anything wrong with that'.

I don't like the 'feel' of optical mice...
that and i just don't trust 'em...
(i'm an oldskool kinda guy, i like mechanical vs technological)
hmm... if the USB guys work ok in dos i would consider it as a valid option... but i would definately prefer a ps2 ...
i'll have to take a look at that logitech mouseman guy... seems to be popular.
have the switches started to fade on you?
(i hate cheap mouse buttons that need constant replacing)
Since it seems that you don't really want anything more advanced than what you had and were surprised at the life you got out of it, then why don't you just buy another Intellimouse? Just a thought.
P.S. I've been using a Logitech cordless wheel mouse for about two years, and I love it. I'll never use a corded one again.

WTF?
lol
Well the MS optical is the best mouse Ive ever used by far.
Ive used the MS Explorer, the MS Intellimouse, The Logitech optical, the Logitech Mouseman Wheel, and the Razer Boomslang 2000.
And if u dont like the so called 'mistracking' of optical mice, the dirt and dead skin on the scrollers are a million times worse than any mistracking you'll experience on optical mice.
Mouseman hurt my pinky after prolonged use, and friends complained about hitting the thumb button by mistake all the time, and the scroller was a little clunky. Also I broke the left clicker on it..I think it has less clicks before failure than a typical mouse. (It was a good mouse, I just had the most experience with this one so I found more to nag about).
Razer was just frikkin heavy and oddshaped.
Explorer felt huge and didnt fit my hand very well.
MS Intellimouse would be second to the optical but the dirt collection is a real pain, and *only* three buttons. The scrollers probably the best outta all the mice here, followed by the optical.
Logitech Optical trys to be like the intellimouse, but the scroller wheel on MS mice are better.
The MS optical's just right

If you dont get an optical mouse, the cycles just gunna happen again, an axis is gunna **** out and you'll be out shopping again.
Whats wrong with optical anyways? Mouse too light?
Most all USB mice come with USB to PS2 converters, so they will work in DOS if hooked up to the PS2.

with optical they give it so you can plug it into a ps2 port. i play games on my logitech all the time and i love it to death. to some time getting used to becasue of the whole if i move alittle so does the mouse.

trust me once you go laser you'll never go back.

My personal favorite is Jerry Mouse from Tom & Jerry fame. A close second would have to be the father of all mice Mickey (as in Mouse).... oh wait, your talking about computers! http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif
My bad. Then I would have to go with either the bland 2 button scroll mice from either Microsoft or Logitech. I personally prefer the optical versions, but you eliminated them already.

I use the Logitech Marble mouse, and I will never go back to a mouse that you have to chase around the desk!
Maintenance is a breeze, just lift the ball out, wipe it off, and wipe out the socket with a soft cloth.
Yes, it's optical and can work both usb or ps2, and the buttons last. I've had this one for about 2.5 years now.

hmm... i'm going shopping on wednesday, perhaps i can get a test drive of the optical angle...
i do alot of photoshop and i've been leery about optics since i have a hard time 'trusting' the tracking of an optical mouse, just based on the ideas of the thing... like if fingerprint gets on the lense, does the mouse **** itself and completely loose accurate functionality?

I totally LOVE my Logitech "mini"-Wheelmouse. It's about 3/4 the size of a typical mouse yet with the same feel & weight of a normal sized mouse. I like it better than my Cordless Wheelmouse and better than my regular sized Wheelmouse.
I too do not like optical mice...bah. I also don't likek the soft mushie wimpie feel of the wheels on most MS mice. Logitech rules. Always has.
This "mini" mouse connects to either a PS/2 port or a USB port, whatever you want.

I'm perfectly satisfied w/a standard Logitech wheel-rat. However, since Kensington's rat software is much better, my next rodent will be a Kensington. They're probably all built on the same Malaysian assembly lines....
I just hate having to clean the ball on those rodents.... With optical mice, I never have to do that. And since I'm not a game mania, I never need to move the mouse so fast that my optical mouse starts going crazy.

And so do I...... You don't have to worry about the tracking on optical mice. They are vey accuarate! An optical mouse tracks movement by taking up to 1,500 snapshots per second of the surface it is placed on, and at an optical resolution of 400dpi Vs. Ball mice at 120~275dpi or so, you can't go wrong.... As for getting your finger print on the optical lens, it's going to take a lot of effort to do so since the optical is in a groove that is approximately 2~3mm in the case of the mouse I'm using. I've been using mine for over a year now and it works like the first day I bought it and I've never cleaned this rodent...

I actually replaced my kensington mouse with the currently defunct M$ intellimouse... I was less than impressed with it. They use really cheap switches, the Left mouse button died in record time... and thier software has some directx wirdness getting the wheel to work in games..

Holy cow that mouse is Whack looking!
<IMG SRC="http://www.panwest.co.kr/product/images/cyberplus.jpg" border=0>
thats my main gripe with the M$ intellimouse opticals... i really dislike that 'red plastic' underbelly with the light on the back... its so cheesy. is that a neccessity of opticals? .. or is thier one that looks *normal* ?

I have Logitechs with the scroll wheel on both my machines. I have a new one still in the package on standby. I buy these for $6.50 each. Great mouse and I sure can't beat the price!

One last point to consider,,, hand size.
When I use the Logitech Cordless TrackMan Wheel, 3 of my fingers are asleep or cold from lack of circulation. I really like the one they throw in with their Logitech Cordless keyboard, because of the shape.
By the way was it just a fluke, or has anyone else noticed how much more quickly the rubber ball in the mouse breaks down since the new styles have come out? I went through about 3 in the last 12 to 18 months. Constantly having to clean them till I taught them how to fly..... They always seem to gob up when your doing something critical, stressful, and pressed for time. I would make my self crazy with the spastic mouse just trying to finish, that's how they get flying lessons too... http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif

i've given track balls an honest shot before, and welp.... i'm not a trackball kinda guy, especially at that price... whew!
i can't afford $100 pointing device... thats just nuts.
hehe... i think my brain would pop if i ever tried to play quake with your config... heck i can't even conform to the 'popular' config of using +move_left +move_right and doing all the turning with the mouse... just doesn't work... my brain's been wired (ever since wolfenstein) for the arrow keys with turn left, turn right +strafe on ctrl... no other way i can do it without giving myself a seizure, <g>

thekingofpain is right. That cordless trackball is great. I used to hate to use trackballs, but this badboy is COMFY!! I have tried three different kinds of trackablls before I settled on that one.
I also have an Intellimouse explorer and its my 2nd favorite. I have also used a Wirelss Microsoft mouse and i hated it. It used RF instead of IR but it seemed SLOW to respond. I do agree with all the guys above tho...optical is the way to go (and most do come with the ps2/usb converter. albeit the thing is a little jiggly, but it works)
Paul
PS: why not goto best buy and handle all their mice? http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

I'm with the King and Paul, and prefer trackballs.
I personally think it is more comfortable and like the fact that it is stationary and takes up less deskspace.
Although I also have mice installed on my systems cause my "lefty" Wife used to prefer using them.

I'm starting to get "mouse wrist". I've seen several people recommend the track ball setup. I'm curious as to how combfortable they are for someone with small hands. Right now I am using a Logitech w/ wheel and really like it, except for the pain.

Personally I'm using a Microsoft Intellimouse explorer, which by the way is way overpriced. However, my hands are fairly large so it fits like a glove.
People keep saying this and that software is better, but I've found that you can use about any PS/2 mouse software for any other PS/2 mouse. In fact, right now the intellimouse is running on A4tech software which you can download from their website. It's about the best I've found, and I shopped around a bit. Just takes a minimum of tinkering. The wheel works in _every_ single thing that can possibly be scrolled and if there are only sideways arrows, it automatically goes sideways. Plus I like the "minimize everything" command for my wheel button. Click it, and everything's instantly in the taskbar, including those obnoxious programs that usually go into the little area in the bottom right.

Logitech optical Marble Mouse is a two button trackball with the ball in the center. It's teardrop shaped, with the fat end at the top, one button on each side. Your thumb does the left click, pinky or ring finger for the right click. It fits my giant paw, and my girlfriend's dainty little hand. The buttons are next to the 1.5" ball, and are over 2.5" long, so the longest or shortest of hands can use it.
Price - $29.95 Best Buy
AND WORTH EVERY PENNY!!

Considering your criteria - no optical and no cordless - I would consider the Logitech I-feel mouse.
Its nice to know you are right over a click point without looking; plus I really do like the Logitech software to control all the various pointing devices.
