Just heard this.

This will probably be the last version of AGP, which will eventually be superseded by PCI Express. Even though PCI is a bus (sharing its bandwidth), PCI Express is a point-to-point connection technology (a dedicated link) and will be well suited for high-performance graphics cards. Initial versions of PCI Express for graphics hardware should appear in 2004 and will double the transfer rate once again, to 4.2 GBps.

Sry to say, but tis true, this is the last AGP spec.

Its giving way to a better, bigger, faster technology.

Hopefully, from the name, this will also replace the old PCI bus as well. They've been putting 'bandages' on the AGP bus to try and keep up, but that PCI bus has got to go. I mean, 33MHz has got to be a bottleneck when you're looking at 166MHz FSB / memory bus etc.

AGP was a bridge to get around the slow PCI. There will probably be a new one 10 years from now when PCI-X* is too slow.

*PCI Express is used on servers. The new one is called PCI-X.

Probably 5 to 10 years from now they'll come out with AGP parallel X and everything will go AGP, and then another 5 years or so, everything will switch back to the old Hyper-ISA-X and AGP + PCI whatever will become obsolete, and the story goes on and on and on

I'm sure there'll be a few people who appreciate a 64-bit bus for their 64-bit SCSI controller (not including ones already in use).
