I wouldn't have a problem with unreliable data being lost;)

xp sp1 should take care of the problem. I know a lot of people are gunshy of sp1, but I haven't had any problems yet. :)

Sorry to be late, but i happen to have 4 x 160 gig Drives, and i know what i'm saying

It's a Win2k/XP bug, they can not read beyond 130 Gig regardless of have that 48 bit enabled or not, with or without SP1

to get AROUND the problem, and use your HDD to its full Capacity

you'll need something like Partition Magic or so to make the Full Drive Available

else you'll get stuck at 127.8 gig

NOW HERE'S THE WARNING

Although you can get the full 160 gig in 1 big chunk or several small chunks

the STUPID OS!!!!!!!! WILL STILL HAVE TROUBLE!!! reading the last 30 gigs that it couldn't see, even if it's formatted and all

by repeated personal experience everytime i try to copy stuff to that 30 gig that it "can't" see, it will corrupt the MBR, is easily fixeable but is annoying

SO!! to use the 160 to its full potential
it's to use it as WinDumb reads it a partition of 130 gig

and the rest of the 30 gig into a Hidden Partition that only LINUX or any other OS can use But WinDumb

then you wont have trouble with your HDD nor with WinDumb

Linux / DOS / win98 has no problem at all using a big Huge partition of 160 gig

is only Win2k and XP that has the problem

I do not agree with Allgamer. All the manufacturer's and Microsoft say the problem is fixable without installing some 3rd party software.

Fixable with what software or update?:eek:

Allgamer is talking about a program called Partition Magic. I'm saying go to Microsofts site, get the service pack 1, and Windows should recognize the extra space. OK?:)

i just install the XP service pack 1.....still XP is not able to recognize my 160gb or 180gb. it still see each hard drives as 128gb. Any body have any ideas? I would really like Xp to recognize the full capacity.

OK guys...thanks for every1 time....
I got it working....instead of connecting it to the PCI ata controller card that came with the WD drive...I connected it to the motherboard IDE ....booted up XP & contol panel disk manager was able to recognize the 180gb as 160gb+-....I did change the registry to enable the LBA....i dont know if that had anything to do with it or not.....i will find out......

my orginal setup was
primary IDE = wd 60gb
p slave IDE = WD 120gb
secondary prime IDE = wd 120gb
secondary slave IDE = cd rom

pci promise ata 100 controller card =
1 = wd 160gb
2 = wd 180gb

new setup ......
primary IDE = wd 60gb
p slave IDE = WD 180gb
secondary prime IDE = wd 160gb
secondary slave IDE = cd rom

pci promise ata 100 controller card =
1 = wd 120gb
2 = wd 120gb

what do you guys think?:t
any data lost risk?

I sure think I'd fill up those large drives beyond the 137GB barrier and test it out before trusting data!

AllGamer isn't the only person to ever have this problem.

Did you read all about it at the WD link I gave you?
