Am looking to purchase a new 30GB ATA100 hard drive for my current system. Already have a 20GB ATA66 main and 15GB ATA33 backup. Looking to move the 20GB main to backup status and install 30GB ATA100 as main. Any opinions as to which is the best drive for such? ATA66 is IBM Deskstar and ATA33 is Western Digital Caviar. Though about Seagate but they only have ATA66. Also considering Western Digital.

I would go with a 7200RPM model if you have alot of media files. I have had great results with Maxtor.

I just added a 30GB IBM Ultra ATA100/7200rpm as a second drive to my son's machine - it cost $149. Really fast drive!
Thanks for your information mjlcarguy and CMonster. I am looking at a 7200rpm drive but have heard that Maxtor is not as good as other name brand drives. My current IBM 20GB gets minor disk errors on a regular basis and fragments very easily. If my Western Digital (backup) was comparable (i.e. size, speed), I would keep that as a backup instead of the IBM.

I may be wrong but I heard Maxtor drives are identical copies of the IBM drives as IBM sold the design to them, maybe someone knows more???
Don't you mean Western Digital and IBM or is Maxtor involved also?

I have installed around 9-10 Maxtors from 6.8 to 30 gigs, never had one problem.

Maxtor drives are fine.
All three of my Maxtor drives said IBM on the sticker.
Thanks to the additional respondents for the information. As Maxtor drives are identical copies of IBM, I think I will look for either Seagate Barracuda or Western Digital Caviar.
