I frequently see discussions about disabling ACPI in the forums. What are the benefits of doing this??

my system kept rebooting and freezing until I disabled ACPI. After doing so it was and still is very stable, every now and then though something just eats up the ram and I haven't been bothered to track it down yet as it only happens infrequently.

I would not disable ACPI in WinXP unless my motherboard was over 3 years old. XP does ACPI very well. Win2K gets switched to Standard PC in my home if the motherboard is a 440BX/KT133 or older, so the general rule is:

Old motherboard = no ACPI.

If the board is stable there is no benifit all. Some systems may have components that conflict with other components that are configured by acpi. If this is the case you can manually configure the irq's with acpi turned off. If your system is stable leave it enabled.

a lot of people blame ACPI for problems when really it isnt anything to do with it
