Can my motherboard handle one of the new Athlon XP 2700 chips with 333 FSB?? I have an MSI KT3 Ultra 2 with an Athlon XP 1500+ in it.

thank you!

With a BIOS update, yes.

Yes...I suppose it does.

check the following page/link for the supported cpu's on your mobo.

What does the BIOS update provide?? Is it just so that the motherboard can "officially" provide a 333 FSB??

It gives you the "switch" to throw in BIOS setup.

Yeah - but can I just run it at a 266 FSB that my current BIOS supports until I either get the new BIOS upgrade or a new motherboard?

Go ahead - as long as your setup can handle the boost in AGP and PCI speeds. You need the divider.

Now I'm really confused - why would adding a newer CPU but leaving the bus speed at 266 (which is what my XP 1500 runs at) increase the PCI or AGP speeds???

You're running an Athlon on a KT3 with a 166MHZ FSB? That's some sort of record. My KT3 Ultra-ARU locks up at 140MHz.

Memory clock and FSB are very different animals. I'm running FSB+33MHz memory bus (HCLK+) on mine, but that's not FSB.

The KT3 ultra and ARU don't support 333 mhz fsb because they lack a 1/5 divider. The ultra 2 does support it.

Um, Gib - it's not a 333MHz FSB. It's the memory bus speed. FSB is either 133 or 166MHz.

I wouldn't try to run a 166MHz Athlon in the Ultra2 until I updated the BIOS because the technology is too new. Frying a $300 CPU is not my favorite hobby.

It's the so called "333mhz" fsb. Amd labels it as such on the new processors. I see what you're saying: It's really 166.

The kt3 ultra 2 should work at 333 fsb (ha ha ha bipolarbill) with the bios update and a 333 mhz (gotcha again!) fsb processor. :p

<edit> BTW - The processor wouldn't fry if the board didn't support 166 fsb and you used a 166 processor. You'd just have a declocked processor, or if you force it to run at 166 fsb, a radically overclocked pci/agp bus. Bye Bye hard drives and cards!
