Hey All

I need to test out about 15 computers that went thru an electrical fire. The server recorded a spike of about 1300 volts. I have an assortment of printers, scanners, monitors and the boxes that I need to test. What I need is some advice on what to look for. If you need any more info just lemme know. Thnx fer yer time.

SO none of the devices are currently working and you want to know which parts inside might be fried?

When you say electrical fire, do you mean an actual flame type of fire, or the spike that you mentioned?

Other than the obvious, burned wires, smoked components ect, about the only way to test these systems is to do it one by one. The powersupplies or course are the most likely to have suffered major damage.

If it were myself, I think I would start off with a case and known...good power supply, start by trying to find a working motherboard and processor, ram, video card and monitor. No keyboard or mouse is needed to get video to a monitor. Once you have something like this to work with, you can then begin substituting parts.

Actually a case is not needed, a motherboard will work quite well outside of a case, laying on a book with some cardboard or papertowels as a cushion.

sounds more like Spikes than Actual frames

else i'd suggest to get brand new systems instead if they were real frames

cuz the insurance should take care of them

if it was just spike "fire"

then i'll suggest to get a good working computer and you'll use it mostly for Test bench to test each single component and parts you remove from all those affected computers

but say if they are more than 100 computers
is best to just have the insurance deal with it :t

Are they all the same make and model? If yes, that is VERY good. If you have ONE fully functional computer of the same make and model (could have been unplugged, in storage, or whatever), then you are IN LUCK my friend. Otherwise, it would be almost too much hassle, too time consuming. I assume there is no insurance involved, or the insurance has paid or is going to and you want to salvage anything you can? Anyhow, with a fully functional, same make and model or very similar system is going to be the easiest way. Good Luck.

I slogged thru most of them, (there were 15 boxes, haven't got to the printers scanners yet). Power Supplies are where I found probs.(and two NIC cards were bad)

What happened is that a semi with those tall smoke stacks crossed the outside electrical wires and sent a jolt into the building. Was a metal building and I think for abit the whole building was electrified. Some of the nails holding the metal to the building frame had burnt marks on them!! Was not as much damage as I thought there would be to the computers. Going to check the CAT 5 wiring today. Fun Fun )-|
