I just recently bought a new Maxtor DiamondMax 40.9 Gig HDD and when i first installed it, i ran the necessary initialzation procedures, this was all done in dos... when i finally formatted the drive it came out only with 32Gigs of freedisk space...

i'm like, what gives?

where did the other 8 Gigs go to?

Any suggestions?

I wish I had that problem. But anyway I'll make do with my 2 13G drives.
Did you check the Maxtor site? they may have some FAQ's to help other people with similar problems. Maybe you could check your M/board manufacturer site in case its bios related.
If you post your m/board and OS details someone may have had the exact same problem or know where to look to help out.

Ok, try this.
Go into Fdisk, by booting up into dos with a boot disk. Either with the Windows 98 Boot Disk or the Emergency Boot Disk.
The 98 Boot Disk has Fdisk on it.

When it asks if you want to run Large Disk Support, type Y

Then create 1 full size partition, set it as active. Exit Fdisk.
Reboot your machine back into Dos and format your Hard Drive.

It won't show as a full 40.9 Gig drive, but you shouldn't be missing that much space.

The other option is to create 2 20Gig partitions (or as many as you like) as long as the first one is set to active.

Thanks Imperion1 !!

That did the trick..

Now i have about 39.8 Gigs of free space.
There is definitely a commendation for you somewhere around here.

Great work~~ http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

Your welcome.
And not a problem. That's what we're all here for.
