I have a new computer with Windows XP Home. The standby option will not work. An error message comes up and says there is a problem with my modem. It refers to my 560rdv92 modem. I am connected to the internet with a cable modem so I don't see how the phone modem can be interfering. The error message says to reload the driver. I have tried that but I just loaded the driver from a disk. do I have to do something to the driver ?

All your hardware must support standby. Sometimes it's a hardware problem, sometimes you can fix it with another/newer driver.
Please give more system specs, do you have ACPI/APM enabled in BIOS ?

ND's right, but most folks end up having problems screwing around with standby, hibernate, powering down drives after inactivity, and all that stuff - particularly if you have more than one user (and kids in the house).

you sure it's that important to you?

I have a new Dell computer with little added to the software. I don't know how to check my BIOS to see weather acpi/apm is activated or not.

What matters is what was activated before installing Windows. Changing BIOS switches now won't help matters much, I'm afraid.

Just set the monitor to go off in 10 minutes - most of the electricity used in computing is lost there in the form of heat escaping though the top vents.

Did you add the modem after you bought the machine? With a new computer you should be able to get it to stand by. Have you played with the power settings? Or the modem's software/drivers maybe causing a problem if it has 'wake on LAN' settings that are activated/deactivated. Also, is the 'Stand-By' button'illuminated when you hit the shut down options? If not it could be the ACPI is not activated in the BIOS. You can check by going into the device manager. There is a possibility, bimolarphil is correct, but I doubt Dell would install Windoze in that mode. My hunch is modem driver or software conflicts.

If you ever get it to work right it will be a milestone in your career and definately time to go job hunting as a tech guru. :p

Just turn off the stupid Modem before you got to "Stand By"

either by

Pressing the On/Off if it's External

or if it's Internal

go to Device Management and

select Dissable

I'm having a similar problem but it is because of the video card I use. The monitor goes off after 10 min, but after 30 min a pop up window appears and tells me that the system cannot go to standby because of the video card and that I might need to update the driver. I will, when I get the time. But this standby thing is not important to me anyway.

Agree with allgame, set to "disable in this profile" via device manager, retains the modem and present (hopefully functional)driver if you ever (rue the day) need to fallback on dialup.
