I've just bought a IBM Deskstar to use with my MSI mobo (which supports UDMA100).

What cables do I need to connect them? Can I use the standard ribbon cables that came with the mobo or do I need a UDMA100 cable (if such a thing exists).

Thx in advance...

H.

No, you cannot use standard 40-wire cable that's used for UDMA33 drives. You will need to use the Conductor No. 80 cables (80-Wire) to utilize the UDMA-100 feature. These are the same cables that are used for the UDMA66 drives. I'm not too sure if your mainboard came with the 80-Wire cables, but most likely it did if it's a newer model mainboard. Get a magnifying glass and count how many strands there are on the cables! http://www.sysopt.com/forum/biggrin.gif
Just kidding! Just look at the cables and see if there are more than 40 wires. There is 40 or 80 so if there's more than 40 wires, that's the right cable for your UDMA-100 drive. Once you know what the 80-Wire cable looks like, you will be able to know the difference between the 40-Wire and the 80-Wire right away. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif

Yes, they should have a blue end on one of the connections. The all black ones are ata33.

Hunston....

So far every mobo that I have purchased that supported ATA-66/100 came with the correct cables...

Ditto, what those guys said. If it's an ATA-66/100 mobo, it should have came with a 40-pin 80-conductor ATA-66/100 cable.

The blue connector goes to the mobo, and the black and grey go to the master and slave respectively. Actually, if there are two drive on the cable, it doesn't matter because the jumpers determine which one is the "master". If you're only putting one drive on the cable, it should go on the end connector (black).

I just purchased an MSI mobo, i'm not sure which one you got, but mine came with the correct one, if your board supports it, I'm sure they included it with your's too.

check out pcmods (http://www.pcmods.com/) They sell pre-rounded ATA 100 cables... very nice quality too... (rather than the stock flat ribbon cables)

The rounded cables are always a good thing.
(a) they look alot better
(b) they allow for less 'clutter'
(c) they allow for better airflow
