I do! The main reason- Chicks dig guys that crack RC5 (and wear a real authentic Dnet Mooo shirt)

Reason #2- We owe it to the greatest site on the web to move up to #1

Reason #3- It's a great excuse to own more then one computer (I've got 8 and getting ready for 4 more http://www.sysopt.com/forum/biggrin.gif)

If you don't know what RC5 is, here's a link: http://www.sysopt.com/rc5team.html

If you want to start and need help installing or configuring the client, go here: http://webpages.cableamericahsa.com/Randy48/rc5.htm (this site is just starting and getting better day by day!)

And to see all the fun you're missing, scroll on down to the Distributed Computing Forum

Because I don't like the idea of keeping my system on 24/7. Nor do I like to see my temperature rise....

NDC--

Bah! I've always heard that keeping your system on 24/7 is actually better for it...rather then turn it on, turn it off *EVERY* time you want to use it.

As far as cooling goes...if you've got a good heatsink/fan installed, I don't think it will affect your system that much. Nor do I think it would do any damage...many of the ppl here have been part of the RC5 effort for over a year and I've yet to hear of a story when it ruined their system. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif

Just my $.02

Ps. I've got my authentic Dnet Moo shirt...do you? http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

NDC - To crack RC5, you don't have to run your system 24/7! I do it by choice (I kindda like my keyrate!)

Temperatures of optimized systems do not rise to unsafe levels!

Me,
I don't.
Prolly because I don't want (or imagine to) to bog down my system resources.

Which version of the client do you guys use? How do I tell how many keys/sec I am cracking? Is the percent/done meter per block? I have 23 OGR packets in buff-in.ogr at 60% done. I have O OGR packets in bugg-out.ogr Does this mean that I am 60% one OGR packet? I've been running rc5 for almost a week worth on continuos cracking on my winchip. How do I signup?

araaraara, happy to have you joining the team! First, if you only want to crack RC5, you need to modify your setup! Go here: http://webpages.cableamericahsa.com/Randy48/rc5.htm

and check out the pages for installation and the other for configuration. Easy to follow! You'll be up and crackin RC5 in no time! As far as joining the Team, you need to crack RC5 at least until you crack one packet (set of "work units" or blocks).

Here's the instructions straight from the Sysopt RC5 page:

So, here's how to obtain the software and join our team!

Download the software for your system.
Configure the software with your email address (go to "file", then the "user" tab, and enter your email address).
Visit your RC5 stats page 24 hours after your software starts crunching away at keys. It will be accessible at http://rc5stats.distributed.net/cgi/emsummary.idc?EM=YOUREMAIL, where YOUREMAIL is your email address. If your email address is sdw@sysopt.com, you could view your stats at http://rc5stats.distributed.net/cgi/emsummary.idc?EM=sdw@sysopt.com.
Now, on your statistics page, scroll to the bottom and click on the "I cannot remember my password" link.
Check your email. You should have received a message from distributed.net. Your user ID# and password should be contained in that message. Make note of them.
Now go to this URL, http://stats.distributed.net/pjointeam.php3?team=9742. A window will pop up. Enter your email address as your user name, and the password which was emailed to you, as your password.

If you're a network admin, try installing the software on some of your nonessential workstations to make the best use of idle CPU time. Be sure to set it on "nice" mode so it keeps out of the way of users.

If someone on our team cracks the code, the individual will receive $1,000, and the team will receive $1,000. It has not yet been decided as to what to do with the team's portion, but you can send suggestions to me at sdw@sysopt.com. Although the prize would be nice, the idea is to have FUN, and to prove the power of distributed computing!

Because it's fun.

Because it's fun to watch yourself climb the stats, and race with your Teammates on Virus' pproxy (http://24.72.9.177/newrc5/byemail.php) .

Because it's fun to see how your Dnet Friends & Neighbors (http://stats.distributed.net/rc5-64/psummary.php3?id=327104) are doing.

Because I'm on a Mission (http://www.sysopt.com/forum/Forum7/HTML/000298.html) that has meaning for me.

Because there's money to win: If someone using distributed.net's software finds the code, distributed.net receives the $10,000 prize, and gives $1,000 to the individual winner, $1,000 to his/her team, $6,000 to a non-profit organization, and distributed.net keeps $2,000. (http://www.sysopt.com/rc5team.html)

Because it's a good way to test my system's stability.

Because it's a good way to see how my CPU processes blocks (keyrate stats).

It's a good excuse.. err.. I mean reason to buy more hardware.

Because CPU cycles are a terrible thing to waste.

Did I mention it's fun? I'm sure there are other reasons I can't think of at the moment.

MooJuice. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

Oh yeah, almost forgot.

A small but powerful team. (http://209.15.121.222/stats/exec.html)

Randy we could use you!! http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif Very impressive stats! You crack more in a day than our entire team does!

N'ah...I'm just not a team player I guess...but I do leave my 2 PC's up 24/7

Does that count?

( I know a few chicks who dig guy's who don't crack http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif )

I'm using version 2.801-463-ctr-00071214 for win32. It came in a zip file. I just extracted it and ran dnetc.exe

How many remember that?

Dang, I figured as much. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif

If it makes a difference, I am still listed at 131 on the sysopt pproxy. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif

I do 24/7 have 4 boxes running, from a old 486 to my tweaked t-bird. I climb up the rank every dump, but there are some of you I cant compete with.

I agree on most of the reasons for cracking RC5...need a moo shirt though..maybe even that won't help http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif
..if it counts..I'm still at #27 on your team

No one else care to give reasons why they're on the Team? You need to help give some of the new people a reason to go on living and join the Team!

Sorry

I really did not understand it. Now I'm with United Devices and cancer research.

I agree, some projects have a real purpose other than fan (which by all means is a good cause http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

The cancer project by United devices looks suspicious to me (too many commercial companies involved).

Folding@home is a true project with potentially human saving results, that's what I run.

I will join as soon as I finish building up my cow.

Well, it will most likely be a little calf (486 DLC), but it will help a little (very little) as it will be dedicated to it.

Why don't I ?

As I read on the distributed channel, some have armies of powerful computers working for them (PIIIs, T-Birds...).

My help would be negligible.

I was a SysOpt member for over half a year and thought "why not help SysOpt out a little." And besides, you aren't a REAL member if you don't crack for SysOpt, like Jad and Smokin, who crack for "The small team with the fun community." http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif

I don't crack because I do not see a pressing need. No one has been able to answer my question about why cracking encryption would help us all out. Because I see no pressing reason for this, I do not want to overwork my cpu and uses excess electricity (I user power options to their fullest on my PC).

Simply "being part of the Sysopt team" does not really compell me to crack RC5.

I'd love to be able to put this thing to better use, but I'm on dialup and the charges (http://www.sysopt.com/forum/Forum1/HTML/012592.html) would sink me. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/frown.gif

Thud, if you're interested in the project, you can crack 24/7 and not be connected to the net! I run 20+ machines that have no internet connection at all, if you're interested in learning how to set it up, e-mail me http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif
