DVD Confusion

I would like to backup my dvd`s, my system and my kids ps2 games. I don`t want to get burned (excuse the pun) and spend money on the wrong format,drive,software and media etc.The more I research the more confusing it gets.What is the deal with single and double layer burners and what are they? I am considering either the Pioneer AO5 or the Sony DRU500A. DVDXCopy in addition to the software that comes with the drives.Am I on the right track?Any and all suggestions greatly appreciated.<J>:(

Sony makes one (at newegg) that burns dvdrw and dvdrw+ (more data per disc +)BOTH. its the only one. :t
