I want to help the RC5 thing and I first installed it on my 486 DLC to give it a try and know how it works before using the other computers in the house.
After a few hours, I opened the case while it is running, touched the CPU and OOOOOOUCH, ****, it's hot ! There's no way it could survive cracking for long like that...
This chip never had any heatsink/fan during its 7 years of life and I don't think it was intended to : there are no clips or anything to fix a heatsink there. Does such thing as a sticky thermal pad exist ? Or is there another way to "glue" a heatsink on it ?

Or cheaper stil is thermal epoxy from Radio Shack. Socket 7 H/S/F unit work good on a 486 chip

Just FYI, Intel 486's ran really, really hot. I remember scorching my finger on a 486DX 33Mhz that also had no heatsink. I just pressed my finger right on the thing wondering if it was warm or not...it was not, it was <FONT COLOR="red">HOT</FONT c>! I may as well have put my digit on a heating element on a stove.
And that was on a computer that didn't do much other than word prcessing/spreadsheets.
So my point is (I think I have a point) those CPUs are designed to run extremely hot, so I wouldn't get too concerned about the heat. However, some additional cooling never hurts.

I got burned once too. A Computer was acting screwy at work, so I pulled the case off, and the fan had fell off the processor, a P133 I believe. So, being the genius that I am, I decided to touch it to see if it was hot. It was, and I burned half my fingerprint off. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

if you go to millisec.com you can get a berquist thermal pad for about $1 ... they are really nice for 'sticking' heat sinks on.
i used em to put the memory coolers and heatsink + fan on my geforce... (hasn't broken its hold yet, and the fan + cu heatsink is upside-down..)
