is it possible to make a cd-rom play DVD's??? i'm not saying to record DVD's, but just play them...
i know my computer also seems to be on crack, but this is a little overboard... in a software program thats on the comp, it says my cd-rom can read DVD... go figure... here's a pic

No, it's just saying it's either a CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive. It's a generalized heading for that category. What type of drive it actually is appears on the right, implied by the name of the drive.
I don't think it's possible to change the initial capability of a CD-ROM drive, but I could be wrong. You'd have to make the drive be able to read (decode) video data (and audio simultaneously). I don't know if this is a firmware or hardware issue. I also don't know if a CD-ROM drive can read 4.7GB of data on one disc, but maybe it can.

Actually, I heard that it was possible to turn a cd burner into a dvd burner, but it has to be a really high quality burner and you need a lot of know how.
(I just heard this, I don't know if it actually works)

The density of a dvd is twice a smuch as a cdrom. By that I mean the dots that are engraved in the disc (or stamped if boughten) are twice as close in both directions. Gap and proximity from the cneter. The lens from a normal cdrom cannot and will not be able to read a dvd. Due to the fact that 2 dots look like one and it cant fine tune it at all. Not gonna happen. DVD's are only $40 man. Buy one. A matter of fact they are phasing out standard cdroms fo rthis reason. Price dif. is like $5.00 so who needs em when you can read all the formats with a dvd!?!:D
If you buy a DVD ROM, make sure you get it with software unless you already have some software.

Do a search on the model #. It is quite possible that it will do both. I have three different drives that will do both. One of them I bought on eBay as a CDROM.
