What is the better card between these and why?

Asound Express PCI with ALS4000 chip

or the

Sound Blaster pci 128 (model# CT4700)

I have the Asound in my AMD k6-3 computer now. thanks for the input.

Well, neither card would be tops on my list of "must-have's", but given a choice between the two, I'd opt for the Creative. Only because I do play games periodically and the CS4281 that the Asound uses just doesn't support Directsound and EAX as well as the Creative. In fact, I think Cirrus Logic discontinued this chip several years ago.

By the way, if you're just looking for a cheap (but decent) upgrade, I recommend the following:

Pine 6-channel CMI8738 (http://www.newegg.com/app/viewproduct.asp?DEPA=&submit=Go&description=Pine+Technology+6%2DCh)

Not exactly an Audigy2 or a Santa Cruz, but it's offers a lot of performance for the money.

thanks for the input. does one or both of these have 4 channels or are they both 2 channel cards? is one gonna be more of a cpu hog than the other? thanks again

SB 128 available in "4D" version, with 4-channel support.
Between the two given I'd take it.

The Express II has 4 channel support, but the original Express only has 2 channels.
