My dad's Diamond Rio 600 died a while ago. He tells me he changed the battery, and when he turned it on it got so hot that he dropped it. He's pretty sure he put the battery in correctly. Anyways he tried another battery and it won't turn on. I looked at it and the on/off switch simply slides along its path, not hitting anything that would turn this device on.

Sorry this isn't quite computer-related, but if anyone out there has some electronics knowledge maybe they can explain what happened?

unless you're in warranty you're probably gonna just want to go buy a new or refurbished - prices I saw were $35 to maybe $60? is it really worth it to mess with it when your Dad can probably get a much better one with prices dropping???

their repair and warranty extension charges are more than what the machine is worth

don't have an MP3 player - will it run with the battery charger attached? try that? and/or you said the power slide switch doesn't seem to "contact" anything - have you taken it apart? if so and you think something has "shorted" look for black smudges or hot spots - and on/off switches usually just connect small strips of copper contacts of some sort

good luck either way

It costs $100 to get it fixed since it's out of warranty. For that price I'm sure I could get him something better for Christmas.

I'm just curious as to what happened internally. I can't find the screwdriver I need to open it - a super-thin one with a six-pointed star-shaped head.
