I tried to defrag a friends drive (running Win95) and even though no processes were running in task manager other than explorer...defrag gets to about 1 or 2 percent of the error check says....drives contents changed, defrag restarting. It does this 10 times (takes a while) then displays message about being unable to defrag, restarted 10 times already, please close all programs and restart defrag. The problem is I have nothing to close.

Thinking it might have been network config running in the background I tried it in Safe Mode - same story ! This drive has not been defraged in a long time, it is not running too healthy at all. Scandisk informs me that the drive is healthy.

I'm wandering in the dark here, please HELP !

Sounds like an anti-virus running. Disable the anti-virus (set it not to run when it boots), then re-boot into Safe Mode and run defrag.

I had the same problem with my son's PC running Win98 SE. I finally ran Scandisk(thorough) and then it ran Defrag. On my PC running Win98 SE, I could not run Scandisk or Defrag at all, then I downloaded an antivirus program, found a bug and now everything runs fine. I would suggest Scandisk/Defrag at least once a week.....

Hope this helps...
