Hey guys, I'm fixing to buy a new video card for a gaming machine, and I noticed on pricewatch the Radeon 9000 Pro 128mb and the Visiontek Xtasy GeForce 3 Ti500 64mb are both around $95. Which one would give better peformance on a MSI 845G Max-L board with a 1.8Ghz Pentium 4 (willamette) and 512mb DDR333 memory? I would think the Radeon would be a better buy because of twice the video memory, but then again, would the GeForce 3 outperform it in raw FPS? Give me your opinions.

hmm, i would say thats a hard one.

personally i would go for the Geforce 3 Ti500 as its a great card and can run all the games today no probs, but the 9000 is a new card with good memory.

But ive heard not so good things about the 9000 so thats why i would grab the Geforce 3 Ti500... but don't get it just yet, cos i don't want the brunt of the blame if it is crapper :).

Wait for BipolarBill to reply, he knows everything

LOL....yeah I'm leaning towards the GeForce just because I've never owned an ATI card, especially for gaming...but still waiting to see what everyone else thinks...the preference so far is:

Visiontek Xtasy GeForce 3 Ti500 64mb = 1
ATI Radeon 9000 Pro 128mb = 0

Pick up an inoo 3d gf4 ti4200 card, rock bottom price and beats both cards

I think the Ti500 would outperform the 9000 Pro... However, the Ti4200 will kick both their A$$E$ and its only a few bucks more.

Ah I didn't even notice that...Visontek Xtasy Ti4200 is only $111.50 on pricewatch...wh00p....I think I've found my video card, thanks guys =)

I am using a ati radeon 7500.

And I am having no problems (64mb ddr).
My games fly even better than before.

Of course the graphic card was a tnt2 32mb.

GEFORCE3TI 500 AND GEFORCE4 TI 4200 ALMOST PERFORM THE SAME LOOK IT UP ON SHARKYS EXTREME AND TOMS HARDWARE. YOU NEED A GEFORCE4 TI 4400 OR 4600 TO PERFORM BETTER THAN THE GEFORCE3 TI 500. THX SEE YA O BYE THE WAY RADEON CARDS SUCK THERE DRIVERS ARE TERRIBLE. I HAD ONE THEY SUCKKKKKKKKK

In most cases Ti500 outperforms R8500, and R8500 outpeforms R9000Pro. Simple math :)
Another solution : Ti4200 :D

Every benchmark i've seen has the 4200 well above and beyond the Ti500... This is directly from tom's

Aquanox:
Ti500: 56.9
Ti4200: 66.1
R8500: 49.1

Max Payne
Ti500: 91.3
Ti4200: 101.1
R8500: 77.5

Quake3
Ti500: 191.2
Ti4200: 199.7
R8500: 196.5

Star Wars Jedi Knight II
Ti500: 89.4
Ti4200: 99.3
R8500: 91.4

3DMark 2001
Ti500: 7783
Ti4200: 8882
R8500: 8414

As you can see the 4200 beats the Ti500 in EVERY catagory. Its averaging 10fps more in every game they benchmarked which is pretty significant. The Ti500 beat the R8500 in a couple of the benchmarks, but I think overall even the R8500 is slightly ahead of the Ti500

"but I think overall even the R8500 is slightly ahead of the Ti500"

Yes! After I have looked over a many reviews ontop of owning a original G3 (inbetween ti200 and 500 speeds) it beats the G3 original hands down. And does take the Ti500 in most cases.

8-10 FRAMES IS HARDLY ALOT. ALSO THATS AT VERY HIGH RESOLUTIONS. YES ITS A LITTLE BETTER BUT NOT $50.00 BETTER AND THATS AT THE LOW END OF THE PRICE SCALE. THE CARDS ON PRICE WATCH LISTED AT 113-118 WITH A COUPON, AND LOOKS LIKE A SCAM. THE NEAREST OTHER OFFERS ARE AROUND 130 TO 199 WITH SHIPPING THE GEFORCE 3 TI 500 IS AS LOW AS 92 DOLLARS.

What are you talking about? Surely not the Radeon 8500. I hope not anyhow LOL. I got the radeon 8500LE with 3.3ns hynix (built by ati) 250/275 flashed retail to 275/275 and mem rated at 300mhz. Now all that NEW free shipping no tax came to a hole $71.00 Now which is cheaper my friend?;)

P.S turn off the caps, **** thats anoying!

Get the ti4200 its the best bet, why buy an older card and be even further behind the game. I own a gf3 now and looking to get a ti4200. 3dmark scores don't lie. Get a ti4200, overclock it and it will be more useful in the future especialy a 128 version.

does anyone have a tbird1.4@1.55 or an 1800+ running a ti500? i'd like to see how closely a ti500 performs in relation to my ti4200.:t

that reasoning has me lost. The 8500 is dx 8.1 and is already using many of the DX9.0 features. How is that old tech?

Go over to the OnlineResultsBrowser at MadOnion (http://www.madonion.com) to compare systems with same cpu/gpu using 3DMark 2001 or PCMark 2002.

You can compare scores http://service.madonion.com/compare?2k1=4531404

I was actually refering to the gf3. But from what I understand is that you'll want a 128 version for future gaming in any variety.

Thats not a prob either for the 8500. The origianal 8500 and the 8500LE come in 128mb varients aswell and are both cheap and easy to find. The LE 128mb goes for about $89-$99.:t

the ti4200 or r8500 are the best bets for a person looking for a videocard for cheap or for good performance. I got my ti4200 128mb for $150 6 mos. ago. Back then, the ti500 was still at $200 for some reason. :x
