...My computer has a nasty habit of devoting ALL it's runtime to reading CD's... IS this normal?
If I was to turn DMA on (Not su re if the drive supports it or not, but anyway), would that help?
I mean, Everything stops.. All audio, All HD activity... Everything.
It's kind of annoying not even being able to move the mouse for about 10 seconds while my dang cd drive revs up and then another 10-20 seconds for it to read a stupid cd.

Suggestions? (other than burn/sledge-o-matic the CD drive, I've already considered that... http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif

Thanks.

Yeah, that one's ince died and is sitting in a box with Creative Lab's Technical dept.'s address on it... http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif
B ut even that one used to do it *sometimes* too... (Creative Blaster 52x).

Get an older 8x-16x in good shape. They are not multispin, and IMO, are better drives than these new throw aways.

I have had some bad experiences with Creative Lab drives.. at work they seem to be the drive to die most frequently..

Not only that but they don't seem to perform as well even when they *are* working..

On the other hand.. I have seen nothing that performs as reliably as a plextor scsi cd-rom..

I cant offer more advice on your cdrom reading problem, but I will echo the sentiment to "STAY AWAY FROM CREATIVE LABS CDROMS". Apologies for shouting but Ive built and repaired a few systems and have noticed that Creative labs drives (especially the fast 40x and upwards) are a real crock. I have found that lower speed and generic no names all are generally better than c-labs.
good luck with your initial problem. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif

So, When I get my new drive on warranty, I should sell it on ebay and get a new one? http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif

Did I mention the drive I'm having trouble with now, is a burner? 2x2x24, Strangely, a generic brand. *chuckle* Ahwell, ya win some, you lose more.
