Most of the Northpoint DSL network went dark tonight. Although my little green light still shows sync.. evidently the DSLAM was disconnected at the CO. Sniff.

Being as I don't want to go thru this again in a year... I'm considering Verizon adsl 640/90 - no cable service is available.

Anyone else out here using Verizon?

Your profile doesn't say where you are, but I'm on Long Island in NY, and I haven't had any major complaints. There were some bumps getting it initially installed and running properly, but that was also partly because it had just become available in my area when I signed up - they were still getting some of their CO systems in place. They did credit me for a week of down time, not much (about $10) but better than "Oops, sorry."

Check out DSL Reports (http://www.dslreports.com) . They have all kinds of reviews, news, and so on about all cable and DSL services from all over the country.

thanks, Ziz, I'm the the Philly area. I finally got thru to my ISP, XO Comm. They looked me up, and found they'd already scheduled me for transfer over to a Covad ciruit, same price, same number of static ip's etc. Hopefully, Covad won't go under before my 12 months is up. I gotta expect a several week wait though.

Thanks.

My Northpoint DSL has been down since last Wednesday (Bellevue/Seattle WA) =(

And this is after a long downtime after being cut off from PSN, which is after a month of no PSN DSL...

aarrrggghhh!!

My buddy was using Northpoint (MSN) and he told me that they no longer have DSL service.... He's stuck with using a 56k modem for the next couple of weeks until he gets a new ISP, he tells me....

Yep...Im stuck on flashcom. They went under in dec. i think. Sold some of their names over to rhythms and northpoint...so I really feel bad for those people.

Funny thing, my connection still works, but the bad thing is that I cannot get out of my contract so that I can transfer on over to another isp! They won't let me...I have to appeal to a court...but then they gladly say that my connection can just go without any notice! Sigh

Does anyone know...I have a static IP, if I just signup under verizon because GTE was my local phone company..and they installed the dsl and such, would I just get my ip and move my isp and thats it. Or would I have to start over with a new ip?

Yes our company too was hit with the Northpoint death. Fortunately we had just been getting it setup and it was not our primary Inet connection yet (we were still trying to get load balancing set up between our two DSL lines when it died), but we were really looking forward to getting off of this ISDN!! Sometimes if we're lucky we get a whopping 1.4kb/sec download!
Hopefully within 2 months we'll be able to switch http://www.sysopt.com/forum/frown.gif
BUT the good thing is, Covad offers 384 SDSL http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif Our max with northpoint was 160 ... Not good enough http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

I'm using Verizon now, it seems to be pretty good (after 3 months of waiting for the connection to be "put in the database.") Speedtests run around 550K download, 60-70K upload.

I'm on a small telco/ISP in rural Indiana, named TDS [tctc.com]. They just hooked me up to a new type ADSL by Elastic Networks. I guess it is different than traditional DSL. You install a NIC and hook up the external modem to the NIC. Then open the Control Panel> Network and enter 4 or 5 numbers and you're on. I get d/l speeds of 700-800k and upload speeds of 700k-1.2gb. $40 a month. I've d/l files with GoZilla and gotten 80K per second.
