Just wondering has anyone else being hit by this strange bug(?)...

OK, I use LAN to connect to internet. The problem is that there is NO WAY I can connect to the internet with Win98! I have tryed even different versions of Win98 but no luck. When I installed WinME as my OS I could connect!

My computer was sending out signals to the net, but NEVER received anything back! So the network was "working" but it wasnt. AARRGGHHH!

Now, all the drivers where the same ones (my network adapters drivers), all the other programs where the same ones and all my settings where alike...But Windows98 didnt allow me to connect to net but WindowsME does! There is NO logical explanation for this one: my roommate has Win98 and it connects fine!

AAAARRRGGHHHH!!! What caused this? Please, share your fears and toughts. (Thank god its now over)

We have a internet proxy at work, it uses client authentication to allow access to the internet. Win98 machines can access the internet through it, only if the correct valid authentication information is used on the first attempt to connect...otherwise the proxy password prompt will never show up again, and the system will be locked out of the firewall until either the user ID is kicked from the proxy software, or the machines IP is changed.

NT4, W2K and ME do not have this issue...as the logon box will apear repeatedly .

So, I think it might be your ISP or proxy.

There may be a lot of reasons that happend, but I've never heard anything like what BBA said. Win98, 98SE, and Me use very similar networking components. There's no need for a new IP address, etc., for Windows 98 clients.

Jim9999...re-read my answer. It only applies to specific Proxy applications...such as a Pix firewall.

I re-read it. I didn't see anything about Pix or a "specific Proxy application".

So did you assume that I was referring to every proxy and firewall program out there?

If so, I can see why you would respond like that, but I still think your response was a little less thoughtful than it could have been. No big deal though.

There was certainly no intention of the response sounding thoughtless, and I apologize for that being the tone. It was late, and the tone may have been born out of haste.

Again - my apologies.

Well....then let me apologize for sounding harsh:
