(Hmmm should this be in apps/OS's if so whip it on over, noticed a Whistler thread runnin here already)
Im curious as I havnt used it long, ive reverted it to a ME type look and attempted to load some MS games without luck so far, my Logitech game controllers (force stick and rumblepad) installed without incident, where did they hide scandisk? IE6 seems pretty cool so far, I may implement it on my other systems---im tryin to figure out the remote desktop function as it allows access to my lan from the field which may be cool while I try to learn to use Slackware Linux, what do you think of it so far???

How is this for my definitive review? http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif

Formated, installed, booted, shutdown, promptly re-formatted, installed WinMe.

Perhaps the final release will prove more satisfactory for myself. ????

Catch ya' later,

if i were to give an honest review, it would pretty much follow robert's line of thinking. i'm not impressed in the least. for those that choose to install it, be sure that you have a good backup because chances are you'll be dumping it.

cheers,

Alittle more info please...im not so adept at evaluating OS's at this point...

It allows you to dualboot upon install---eliminating it (and losing what you have) isnt an issue...

The GUI is overdesigned (though you can change this), the underlying hardware abstraction layer is rather resource intensive, and 3D video acceleration did not prove stable enough for my needs. I still prefer Win9x/ME for the majority of my operations, as I require an OS with reliable 3D rendering support.

I will likely have to "upgrade" one of my boxes to WinXP upon retail release. For the rest of my boxes, I am currently leaning towards a transistion to non-MS operating systems. I believe BeOS best suits my workstation needs, especially when Be gets around to the release of a full hardware accelerated OpenGL implementation. Likewise, I will likely move my server operations to Sun Solaris or OpenBSD.

Sheeze...What do you expect from an OS that is still in BETA...RC1 hasnt even been released yet...They have atleast 2 Release Canidates planned. I remember hearing the same thing about win95 then Win95b ect..Win98 and then Win98se and Windows 2000 ect ect. I'm sure the FINAL release will be MUCH better...You know as much as me that many hardware manufactures wont even do drivers until it reaches at least RC levels let alone until it reaches Final release.

Just my 2 cents

I'm invited to a WinXP Kick-Off Event from MS next week and then I will get to test it (I will surely post my thoughts here).

I am currently running XP and I must say that I love it. The new Gui is really cool and can be customized. As far as reliablity I have been running it for about 3 weeks without a single bug and this is only a beta release. Also When I installed I didnt have to load any drivers at all. The only thing I recommend is if you are a gamer and use an nvidia card I would install the lastest reference drivers. These are better then the ones that are loaded when you install. It has many of the same features as 2000 and more. Hope this helps.

PS if anyone uses ICS you will like the new version included in XP. Has alot of good stuff like a built in firewall http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

How are you people getting your hands on XP? I'd love to test/play with it, if I knew how to get a copy (and I mean legitimately get a copy).

I've been using it for 8 days (Beta1 2296) and will NEVER go back to the 9x kernel.
It's smooth, fast, configurable, not one single BSOD/lockup, it just works. Install required ONE restart, all hardware found and installed with ease (no extra drivers necessary)...

To get your copy of XP, go here: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/preview/order.asp

So I pay to download XP? Bah, I would not mind paying for a cd sent to me in the mail, but I do not have broadband ATM, and why the hell should I pay to beta test???

XP can only be provided to those who have a Credit Card, correct?
Or are there versions that can be downloaded for free?

Running Beta 2:

I don't really like the new shell and icons. Also, there's the fact that there are neither "my computer" or "network neighborhood" links on the desktop, so you have to go through the start menu.

In addition, the icons in My Computer are HUGE (can fit 24 on the screen) and the handy address bar is there no longer in My Computer.

I definitely wouldn't run this on my home computer.

Nighthawk if you want those icons on the screen go to the taskbar/start menu options and pick classic. This will put the standard icons on the desktop(normal size)
like My computer,recycle bin,Network neighborhood,etc.

Figured out my gaming issue---OOOPS forgot to re-install my 4in1's after the clean install...can anyone direct me to the scandisk or similar utility? I usually run Norton over a fresh install and cant with this one, it assures me that everythings all "in place" or somethin?

Yesterday I got my Beta2 CD from MS.
Is it really worth trying?
Should I risk installing it on my work-laptop?

Ive since uninstalled it, my burner refused to work with it was the only prob (after applying the patches) check your hardware out...

Beta 2, installed it and it crashed within 5 minutes, watched a Divx movie and it crashed again, DELETED IT!

My next try will be RC1.

Oh and this is supposed to play games right? THPS 2 does not run under it either.

Check your burner to see if it's on the HCL.
There's also a list at Adaptec of burners that won't work with version X.X of their software in Windows 2000 (assume XP is the same, it is...)(my burner was not on the list)
Check your burner software for Win2000 compatibility (mine wasn't).
Hunt down updates for my software (@#^$#&$#%#$ Adaptec)...still doesn't work.
Found a good burning program that DOES work with Win2000, happy burning.

Everyone said the same about W2K. I think W2K is the most stable OS yet. Many may disagree, but usually it is only because they do not know how to use it.

Remember this is a beta/test/pre-release distribution as yet. You can not expect all features and stability when you test software like this. If you publicly flame it, you are not being true to the purpose of installing it in the first place ( and you had no reason to even have it )...which is to help debug it and identify issues so the final product is as good as it can be.

I am sure it is not like the final release.
I plan to run it when I get the final software version.
