When I use Win98SE's <System Tools><Disk Cleanup> utility to erase Temporary Internet, Temp, etc.......then go into these folders via Explorer, the folders still have huge numbers of files in them. The only way I can delete them is manually. What's up?

Also, is there a way to clean out, delete, or some other way manage the Windows Swap file?

i believe those files you are having to manually delete are "cookies"

Windows will never delete cookies, It is something you will have to do yourself...

SnapperOne... here is the easiest way to make all those files go away.

1.boot to DOS
2. in C:\Windows type "deltree tempor~1" without the quotes. That will remove your temporary internet files.
3. Then type "deltree cookies" again without the quotes.

That is the best way to remove all traces of the internet from the system, as there are also a couple of files stored in those directories that windows will not let you delete.

IE 6 beta has an extra button "Delete Cookies". It's still in beta stage though. I have been using it for about 2 weeks now ... NEVER experienced ANY problems... It's kinda faster too.... A LOT better than previous versions.

Is it advisable to delete all cookies ?.

I am aware that some sites like Sysopt need cookies in order to store member info in the browser.

What are the disadvantages of using cookies, and would it be advisable to set IE to warn me before accepting any cookies, or would i be getting alerts every 2 seconds and go nuts ?.

Ok...if you use IE5 or newer, manually deleting these files WILL NOT DELETE THEM.

You are only seeing a listing of the files stored compressed in a cab system folder.

The ONLY way to correctly remove these files is through internet explorer tools/internet options/delete temporary internet files options.

No...a batch file or script run on logon WILL NOT WORK.

PS: This issue has been discussed in great detail here in the past...I believe it can be researched by Socalgal's posts.

BBA..

Would my methods not work?

Gomer...it depends on the IE version and where the tif's are actually located.

IE5 is designed to hide it's tif's for some reason.

I am using IE version 5.00.2314.1003

To the best of my knowledge all my TIF's are in C:\WINDOWS\Temporary Internet Files. Inlcuded in that directory is the subdirectory

C:\WINDOWS\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5

\Content.IE5 contains folders with names such as M4XDWMKZ,OTQVKLEN, etc. All of those folders contain various TIF's.

"Deltree tempor~1" zaps all of these and the resulting chunks of space they had occupied can be seen while defragging. Where else might these TIF's be hiding?

whenever you visit a site that needs a cookie on your machine, if one isn't present, it will set one there for subsequent visits as long as you have them enabled on your browser.
So if you delete your sysopt cookie for example, it will get a new one the next time you visit.
The warning popup will drive you nuts very quickly...

There are "hidden" files... I used to remove them manually, but it's so task driven, why do that when I don't have to?

Try this cool little prog: Spider (http://www.fsm.nl/ward/) and it should clean you right up. I use it and it finds all kinda stuff, even gets the Recycle Bin http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif

Here's an example from a recent log of a scan and cleanup of only Win dir (XXXXX = my admin name, on a W2K OS):

c:\Documents and Settings\XXXXXX\Cookies\index.dat
c:\Documents and Settings\XXXXXXX\Local Settings\History\History.IE5\index.dat
c:\Documents and Settings\XXXXXXXX\Local Settings\History\History.IE5\MSHist012000031120000 312\index.dat
c:\Documents and Settings\XXXXXX\Local Settings\History\History.IE5\MSHist012001031820010 319\index.dat
c:\Documents and Settings\XXXXXXX\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\index.dat
c:\Documents and Settings\Default User\Cookies\index.dat
c:\Documents and Settings\Default User\Local Settings\History\History.IE5\index.dat
c:\Documents and Settings\Default User\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\index.dat
c:\Recycled\Dc177\Cookies\index.dat
c:\Documents and Settings\Default User\Cookies\*.*
c:\Documents and Settings\Default User\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\*.*
c:\Documents and Settings\Default User\Local Settings\History\History.IE5\*.*
c:\Documents and Settings\XXXXXXX\Local Settings\History\History.IE5\*.*
c:\Documents and Settings\XXXXXX\Local Settings\History\History.IE5\MSHist012000031120000 312\*.*
c:\Documents and Settings\XXXXXX\Local Settings\History\History.IE5\MSHist012001031820010 319\*.*
c:\Documents and Settings\XXXXXX\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\*.*
c:\Documents and Settings\XXXXXX\Cookies\*.*
c:\Recycled\Dc177\Cookies\*.*

You can option it for your Win dir or the entire hdd; to remove hidden URLs, cookies, TIFs and / or History Files.

Hmmm...kinda neat...I might check it out...maybe...maybe not.

I don't have any problems keeping about 10 megs of TIF's locally...causes no problems for me. I just limit the size in IE's settings, and set it to check for newer files every time I visit a page.

Tried the Spider program after doing my deltree routine, and it found nothing. So I guess the deltree method is sufficient for my IE version.

Anyone bother checking the size of the Temporary Internet Files folder? I did and mine is 500+MB's with all kinds of hidden **** in it that I can see by c&p the folder. I saw things like banner ads, zip files, etc.. being copied. Even after trying to clean the folder using IE, Spider and WinBrush 2001.

BBA IE 5.5 does NOT clean them all!

Socal Spider did not either.

Windows washer is next and then I will give deltree a try.

Windows Washer did it. 28,801 files cleaned.

And just to be clear I had 14,161 files and 17 folders hidden in my Temporary Internet Files folder after deleting every thing (acording to the folder properties) but I could not see any files? I do have show hidden files and folders checked and I have hide protected system files unchecked.

Gomer - your method works fine for Win9x.

JAD...I think there might be a reason.

I bet you have logged into windows with more than one user ID, in which case the tif's under the currently logged on ID only would be erased, but not all.

So, I guess you have to decide if you want them all gone or if you just want the ones effecting you gone.

Then again, on the other hand, your PC could just be hosed by itself, mimicking the problems, in which case I guess the Window Washer just might to be your best bet.

So, from all this I will say that any one solution may not work for all systems.
