Hallo folks.
I want to buy an new 80 GB HD (Western Digital 800BB). But I'm not sure my motherboard (Chaintech 6BTM; chipset: 440BX; Award System BIOS (original version)) can handle a Disk that large.
Does anyone has experience with large Harddisks on this particular motherboard? Do I need a BIOS upgrade?
Thanks.
Jasper

I really doubt that this board can handle anything over 40GB, but a BIOS update is a good idea.

You can always add a Promise or Maxtor UltraATA card - the drive will run faster with one.

I guess such a UltraAta card is going to cost me quite a lot money?
Where can I find a good tutorial explaining how to upgrade my BIOS? Thiss will make it possible to add a 80gb drive?
Thanks!!
edit: On the site you mentioned: Are older updates integrated, if I install the latest update?

On the site you mentioned: Are older updates integrated, if I install the latest update? Yes - all updates are customarily folded into the newest one. I guess such a UltraAta card is going to cost me quite a lot money? Not really.

http://www.chaintech.com.tw/FILES/UTILITY/FLASH708.exe
Unzip the BIOS by opening it. Copy the flasher and the BIOS file to bootable floppy. Get the floppy here:
http://www.mirrors.org/archived_software/www.bootdisk.com/winfiles/boot622.exe
Run that file to make the floppy and then copy the files over.
Boot with the floppy and type FLASH708.
The flasher will ask you the name of the file. You say 6BTM0817.BIN. It will ask you if you want to save yours. You say yes and type in OLDBIOS.BIN.
Lastly, you say yes to programming the BIOS. Afterward, unplug the PC and use the Clear CMOS jumper. and then restart normally.

Delete any folders. Leave:
COMMAND.COM
IO.SYS
MSDOS.SYS
MODE.COM
CONFIG.SYS
DISPLAY.SYS
That's all you need. If you don't have them all, don't worry.

I let XP make a bootable disk!! That contains the needed files.
After a last check of all versions etc. i decided to flash the BIOS.
But the Bios flasher gave an error ( Unknown Flash Type ). I tried with both the latest and version 7.08.
Do you know why this error appears?
I found out my MB is called CT-6BTM instead of just 6BTM. Is this a problem?
I hope you know what's going wrong!
thanks.
edit: YEEAAHH!!! It worked!!! I set the CMOS to default, and then it worked!! Thanks for your help!!!!
THANK YOU!!!!
